Cambridge Audio subwoofer repair?

I have an active Cambridge Audio sub connected to an Onkyo receiver, the sub cuts in and out from time to time and emits the odd 'pop' sound. Giving the sub a smack re-engages it for a short period but it invariably drops out again. I'm no stranger to a soldering iron but I think its a problem that would be best diagnosed…
