Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What is it about Irish parents that they have such a negative view of their kids emigrating and broadening their horizons, and God forbid, doing well in another country?

As the Mother of 2 teens who want to go abroad to study I know they will leave in a few short years. And I will miss them. But I have my own life. I wont be snivelling on the end of skype and making them feel bad. I wont be moaning to Joe and sitting at home packing parcels to send them.

Your job as a parent is to give kids roots and WINGS....We are such a nation of pessimists.
having lived in several other countries I like Ireland and being home but God we are a depressing lot

i'm sure we are closer to boston, than boston is to parts of mainland USA , so whats her point ? just cause they are staying in america does not mean they are anyway close to their home ..

I'm stealing that for my Christmas arguments with my overbearing aunt who won't let her 21 year old rural dwelling son learn how to drive 'because it's so dangerous'.

I agree with the priest, they should take religion and communion out of the school, if parents want kids to make their communion etc. they should do sunday school or do it out of school time. Then lets see how many kids actually make their communion.

Aren't travelers very religious though? I always thought they were and attended mass?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

I'm surprised that Joe is on the defensive here. Joe should ask himself: "What would Big Jim Larkin do?"

Would Jim buy a Communion dress for 2k? He would in his hoop.

I get the feeling that Joe doesn't think there is a problem with spending 2,100 euro on a communion dress..

You wouldnt see Barnardos spending 2100 on a wedding dress... 2100 a week on Fergus Finlay alright, but not on a dress...

No crashes on Firefox. If the problem continues, there is only one thing to do: Ring Joe. Please do not write him a letter though. We couldn't take that. Worse still, it'd start half the country writing in about their dodgy broadband and phone lines. Some mammy would write in saying how as her child grew up, she had lots of problems like getting her a communion dress and convincing her not to emigrate, but she could never ring the show because her phone kept cutting out, and she refused to get a mobile because of how all of the providers rip you off. Anyway, she was broke after the communion dress which she is still paying for due to the banks refusing to give her a loan and the money lenders charging her extortionate rates. It's a tough life.

I meant that out of all the people getting their communion, traveler children are probably more likely to continue going to mass.
