Ah sure losing the odd limb lightens the mood after losing a few quid through a scam.

    Constructive answers only please.

Joe, have you never heard of the phrase "any other MATERIAL information" with regard to insurance?

I'm pretty sure a missing arm would qualify as such.

I think people who are missing limbs should certainly be assisted in getting mobile - after all how many are there in reality, it's a pittance in the overall scheme and would make a huge difference to their lives.

    Bloody red tape and bureaucrats.

Not unknown - bloke I knew lost his left arm in the steelworks. He still drove a manual and had a click-on adapter he put on his forearm prosthetic which clicked onto the gear stick. When he went into another car, he just used his hook.

I was in a pub in Germany a few years ago and the barman was one handed, when filling a pint he would to turn off the beer tap with his head..

It was just a general anecdote - not specific to this guy. However, the most inventive devices come from disability specialists and from amputees.

It's true , he would be an unusual scenario but because he doesn't fit into the legislation, no public servant is going to override it for fear of being reprimanded by a senior , meanwhile people suffer on .

I reckon the majority of drivers have only one arm.

That would be the reason they cant indicate wouldn't it?

You do realise there is minimal public transport in rural Ireland.

Meanwhile in Limerick, Irish Rail have appealed for calm as queues gather for trains to Heuston to avail of Supermac's pre Christmas 'Special Offers'.

I missed a little bit of the last call but was there any reason he couldn't buy himself an automatic car or any reason it wouldn't suit his particular situation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,069 ✭✭✭✭Dan Jaman

I am old enough to remember the sight of several limbless veterans in the street, post WW2. Not entirely an unusual occurence back then, and it didn't attract much attention by way of staring. Of course, some people would have, but there's always a few.

    He wasn't claiming it is!

He was pointing out the anomalies in the rules/legislation that say that someone who loses a lower limb can have a tax rebate on getting a car adapted, but someone who loses an upper limb can't, unless they've lost both limbs - and looking for support in a campaign to get those rules changed.

Were you even listening to him?

It's not that. They are greeting other drivers with one or two fingers, or eating breakfast, or having a coffee, or doing their makeup, or rubbing the sleep from their eye or playing with their gear stick!!!

It was some help with the extra needed to convert the car ie to enable him to control lights . indicators etc
