Data recovery on a Nokia 100

My friends Nokia 100 stopped reading the SIM card. Half his contacts were on the SIM, the other half on the phone. He got a new phone and SIM, but he can't see the contact left on the old phone. Anyone know the best way round this? Is there a cable I can get him that would read to a PC? Or would I have to bring to a data recovery place?

He took it to the shop, but they weren't very helpful (once they had sold him a new phone).
