What does a vodaphone upgrade mean?

I'm due an upgrade next april with Vodaphone, currently on 55 a month (red I think) with Iphone 5. Will vodaphones "upgrade" mean a continuation of the existing contract, ie 55 a month or will I be able to change to go pay as you go with a new phone.
