Public care - hospital only

Does anyone have any experience of going with hospital care only on the public system, as opposed to combined care? I was speaking to a Holles St midwife today and she said that, while they encourage mothers to opt for combined care, if a woman would prefer to visit the hospital only, she'll be accommodated.

I've had several bad experiences with a couple of different GPs on previous pregnancies and miscarriages. On the other hand, I've had overwhelmingly positive experiences in Holles St. My most recent pregnancy was ectopic, so I'll have to book an early scan with the hospital anyways to make sure this isn't another ectopic. I don't feel any need to see my GP to confirm the pregnancy first as I am sure of my dates.

My question really is, is there any reason not to go this route, any potential disadvantages? The location is very convenient for me. I don't mind queuing a bit longer than I would in the GP (having said that, I rarely was waiting long for hospital appointments anyways in the past.) I love the reassurance of getting a scan at every appointment. But I feel there must be some catch, or else why wouldn't more people do this?

Also, after the birth, are the two-week and six-week check-ups then done at the hospital, or do you have to go to a GP for those? Not that it really matters, I'm just wondering.

    Thanks.

I never went with combined care. The hospital was more convenient than my GP (they didn't do appointments so going up and waiting up to 5 hours was always a horrible experience even if you weren't pregnant).

You have to pay for your six week check up for the GP if you don't sign up for combined care.

I never did combined care either (private patient). My GP is good but I wanted the expertise of a specialist for pregnancy and I felt the extra scans and hospital setting suited me better.
I was not charged by my GP for a six week (very cursory TBH and not really essential) check. He said it was part of the care for every pregnant woman, not just for those doing combined care.
