ripping and editing DVDs

I have just had a load of old VHS tapes copied onto dvd. They are all old tv programmes, panorama, horizon and suchlike. Now I want to rip them onto my hard drive and then edit some of them down. suitable software to download, please??? THANK YOU!!!

If you've had them copied from VHS, you wont need to rip them as they wont be encrypted.

I'll let someone else recommend editing software.
