    This post has been deleted.

The Ferrari formula one car for 2014 had the following model designation and it was on the front of the car.

    F14T

    Just saying :)

Conceptually, I would take the view that the shared platform was in effect a shared component. So the new model expands that to everything. But its beyond sharing, it brings new build options. Maybe that's too simplistic a view.

My point is clarifying which models are unique to Audi and which are on shared platforms. A lot of people still seem to think the Passat is the same platform as the A4 which is not the case.

Audi are unlikely to drop the longitudinal platform on the A4 and larger since the Torsen Quattro system is too big a selling point to drop (even though it doesn't sell well here).

The big idea behind MQB is that it's a component kit that can be adapted to different chassis/platforms. They're moving away from the shared platform model entirely.
You're right, folk do keep getting confused. Back in '97 the Passat was IR£6,000 cheaper than the A4 and just as well built, equipped, same engines, and longer version of the same platform and was a no brainer. Now though they are different.
However, I'd still maintain, particularly with the new model Passat, that unless you're going to bother with a quattro A4 and a few extras, then a Highline Passat with the 190bhp diesel is a better car than the entry level A4's with FWD.
Interestingly, on the Phaeton and A8, the A8 is nearly half a tonne lighter thanks to it's use of Aluminium, and given that probably the best engine to get in either is the 3 litre V6 diesel, the A8 is more economical, a bit better to drive and a bit quicker!

neither are really an accurate image of Audi's available to the average man.

this would be a more accurate representation of Audi in Ireland imo.

i'm just saying we can all post up ex-rally cars and le-mans cars that look pretty and make a great bit of pub take to say a manufacturer is great, but the fact is those cars aren't an accurate reflection of what people actually have access to.

like when i tell people i drive a toyota, i'd love them to think:

but the reality is closer to:

That wasn't the point though. The OP made the point that Audi's are boring and don't make any effort in technology and branding. Whereas they are heavily invested in Motorsport and have a long tradition in motorsport. Thats the image they promote with the S line, Quatto, and S models.Sporting Diesels? they pretty much invented them. You can't say this of Toyota's current line up in Ireland. The current TT is lovely bit of kit no? I like the A5/S5 I think thats really nice aswell.

Personally I think the A4 posted is quite sharp and crisp and modern looking.
The Toyota on the other hand isn't. I like toyota's. But I think the OP comments fit much better on Toyota than they do Audi.

There has been no properly cool Audi since the 100LS. Youngfellas, look it up! :)

    Nope, BMW did really.

By invented I meant popularised. For me I wasn't really really aware of diesel in racing till VAG did with the Golf and then Audi started at it. At the time early 80's VAG diesels were everywhere. For me anyway the popularity of 320d and 330d came much later. Maybe I'm wrong.

If you want to be specific about "racing diesels" they go back even long before that.
