Bought it earlier in the month. I am enjoying it so far :)

Feels like like a mix between XCOM & Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel set in a zombie themed world. You create your character and can assign them certain skills that can either be geared towards Combat, Defense or Skills that help the camp in terms of survivability such as Mechanical, Science, Scavenging etc

You start with a bunch of preset survivors who each have their own skills and can bring along with on missions, or you can assign them jobs for the camp such as making weapons, repairing structures, building etc. you'll eventually find more survivors to join your camp via key events or random events.

Combat is very reminiscent of fallout, even in terms of the UI. So basically you have a weapon, you have AP points, use AP points against zombies/bandits and that's really it.

You have to manage the social aspect of the surivors as well, each one has a need or want and you can keep them happy by scavenging items they need (such as booze, dope, chocolate etc).

Overall it's a great game, if you like either XCOM or Fallout type of games you will like this. My only gripes are that the mission maps are kind of smaller for a modern game and also that areas that you scavenge do not respawn (you can revisit them however). The world map looks big enough though.

You dont any get xp for fights?

Kairo is 99c, this game is a must have if you are into puzzle adventures like Antichamber, Fez, Myst.

    ...

There is no dialogue in the game - but there's an amazing story that is given out through very subtle hints. One of the best atmospheres I've experienced in a game between the music and aesthetics. I loved it so much I bought 4 copies for friends and the soundtrack! Highly recommended.

    How long is it?

Edit: Looks like 3-4 hours. Sounds like one I'd finish. Into the cart... :)

Don't forget to keep an eye on amazon's matching of prices, everyone.

I think the community choice has been pretty poor so far. Considering it's only once a day compared to three times a day, I expected the selection to be a good bit better.

I still haven't drawn blood. I've a huge backlog and it's getting to the stage where my machine can't run newer games so my only purchases have been Bastion and Trine for my sister and I actually got those off Humble as they were cheaper. Come on South Park!

May as well since I enjoyed the last random 99c purchase I made.

    Thanks for the recommendation

Assetto Corsa is just out of early access, on v1.0 now so it's unlikely it'll get any bigger discount for a good while

Unless you have a wheel and pedal setup i wouldnt get AC, its an amazing racing sim that deserves a proper setup to do it justice.
Then again if you wish to play with some aids on then its playable with a pad but to really appreciate the intricate physics you need a wheel and pedal setup.

I'm pretty happy with myself atm :D

I tried to convince myself not to buy anything I wasn't going to play right away, so been playing Revengeance today and chuffed with myself that I didn't just leave it languish in my library. Tough so far, and to be honest I'm not all that familiar with the type of game it is, as I haven't really been a console player for a very long time and never played any of the Devil May Cry style games at all. but it's nice to play something different ;)

No XP system as far as I'm aware. Get skill points by completing goals. You have a to-do list for your camp. Some are once off or required within a short time (example repair the fence) and others are constant like getting 20kilograms of food for the camp.

Learn the parry system. All you have to do is pres towards an enemy and light attack to interrupt their attack. Once you start doing that the game just gets amazing. You can parry everything unless the attacker glows yellow beforehand, even stuff you really shouldn't be able to parry.

Another bit of advice is that there's a skill you need to unlock that allows you dodge said attacks when the enemy glows yellow. Bit silly that it's locked away since it's pretty much essential to the game so unlock that before anything else.

Cheers retro for your gift :) Will have a pop at it over christmas.

So far this sale have gotten Spintyres, Go!Go!Nippon, and Mount Your Friends. Nothing special. Not sure if there's anything else I'd like except I'd love a big discount on Wasteland 2 :)

Does that not making fighting pointless and tedious though that there's no xp system? :/

yeah, I got stuck last night at the part where you have to fight those two walker type enemies, so had to look up some videos on how to actually parry, and spent some time in the VR missions practicing it a bit. I actually thought the game was just button mashing up until that point, and promptly got my ass handed to me. :p

Got as far as the boss with the chainsaw tail, it's a hell of a lot tougher than I expected. Got to grips with how to rip peoples spines out though. ;)

It's a very different experience for me, I don't play many Japanese games at all.

Not really, I think the whole design of the game is based about survival for your camp. Since area's don't respawn, there wasn't that guarantee that your survivors will level up equally. I use one of the first characters in the camp alot because she specialises in melee and useful with a sledgehammer. She can kill zeds most of the time in one hit. If I kept using her she'd level up all the time and the others would lag behind. So in this case it makes more sense to not have XP.

If the areas respawned with enemies/loot then XP would make sense. It's a shame that it doesn't though and I hope they implement a sandbox mode at some point.

Tbh the game is a mixed bag, you may or may not enjoy it. I would recommend it on a sale but maybe not full retail. If you preferred more strategic squad based that utilises AP and XP then I would recommend Xenonauts as an alternative, and it's cheaper even at full retail price.

Got it also on GreenManGaming for €12. Looking forward to trying it.

I've actually bought more from HumbleBundle or GreenManGaming this time around than Steam, even though I have a bit of Steam cash. I've been buying more so gifts and DLC during the steam sale.

Ah Blade Wolf, that's the point where the game goes 'right if you don't learn how to parry you ain't getting past this fight so learn!' :)

Does it kill anyone else that the game runs 60FPS solid and then the cut-scenes run 30 and its like night and day for smoothness?

Cutscenes are pre recorded so there's not a lot really the devs could do about it. Think they run in 720p as well.

That doesn't really bother me, but something that kinda bugged me is that you can't play the game in Japanese with English subtitles. I found you could do that with The Last Remnant (really must try that game again, couldn't get into it before) and thought more Japanese games might have that option, but I guess not :o

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,278 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The english localisation is really good for Metal Gear games usually and most of the voices are iconic (although lets not get into them replacing Hayter!). The game is better in English than japanese especially when the characters are american, it's kind of jarring if they speak japanese. The voice cast is probably better than the japanese voice cast as well.

Maybe it's just habit from watching anime, as I find the English dubs are usually horrid and downright unbearable  just thinking it would be cool if the option was there.
