Can you avoid USIT type agencies and apply directly to US Embassy for J1?

It's just as easy, with the exceptance of getting the paperwork sorted yourself. You will save yourself a heap by cutting out gimpy middlemen, but it does mean sorting stuff out yourself more before heading on over. If you know people on the ground already, save yourself a lot of hassle and cash: just go directly to the embassy.
