I was wondering if anyone has ever used a hdpe food grade plastic barrel as a fermenter , the blue 60 or 120 liter type with the black lids.

if it's food grade, then it's good to go, just be aware that it's a relatively hard affair to rack/bottle from a FV with no tap.

You can drill a hole for a tap no problem..
