Modern POP3 email client

Dummy question from a slow upgrader.

I have been using quite happily an ancient e-mail client package for many years to access my mail from my eircom.net account. I could just simply use Webmail, but I like to have my standalone client which I use to manage, filter and store such incoming mails as I want to keep.

Having recently upgraded to a Windows 8 machine, I thought it was high time to upgrade to a slightly more modern e-mail package because the one I use, although it still works, is no longer supported. It's so old I'm almost embarrassed to say what it is but hey, if it ain't broke, I almost shouldn't be trying to fix it.

Windows Mail doesn't work with POP3 accounts. Eircom doesn't seem to support IMAP as far as I can see.

I don't want a Webmail only account. Is there anything available as an alternative?

    Thanking any contributions in advance.

this rings a bell if you don't want webmail used this years ago as an alternative to outlook was decent back in the day (8 years ago!)

I was forced to get a new email account by the lovely people at vodafone.ie discontinuing their service. I now use inbox.com, mostly by webmail, but also by POP3 using Thunderbird

Yes they do, but not on all accounts. Some really old accounts never got 'converted' when eircom changed over to a new email server system, and these remain as POP3 only. But newer ones are certainly IMAP compatible. If you log in to your account via webmail do you get a really basic interface like this ...

    or a fancier one?

    OP doesn't want a webmail-only solution

OP, look here for various options: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IE/windows-8/pop-email-accounts. Of the many email clients available, Outlook and Thunderbird are the most popular. You can see a comparison of loads of different ones here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_email_clients

Before I moved to webmail exclusively, I liked Evolution - it's a Gnome project so it looks fairly decent, and had fairly regular development up until recently. There is an older Windows port which may work for you, but it works best on a recent Linux install.

    Outlook Express? :p

Yes it does! Well that is, Windows Live Mail. There's also an easy transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail - linky

Alternatively, setup a gmail account or use your existing gmail account and add your eircom.net email account to your gmail account and use google's IMAP. This is what I do with all my ancient POP3 accounts (eircom / oceanfree, etc.)

    Not Even close :P

I know this is a Bump but just to report back to all the helpful suggestions, I have been using Thunderbird quite happily for a few months now. Nearly identical to the old one (Bet no one can tell what it is yet) even though some of the keyboard shortcut commands are different, but this old dog is still capable of learning new tricks.

    Thanks to all for suggestions.
