There should be an expansion tank to the right of the radiator.

Yes that helps....is that orange cap in the middle where the water goes into

OP, yep it's the orange cap in the bottom left. Only open it when the engine is cold as if the engine/water is hot, it can be up to 90C and be under pressure and squirt hot water, burning you. Only open when the rad is cold to touch.

It should not take much coolant and adding a small bit of water is fine (ideally you should be adding coolant but a little water is fine). When you open it have a look in and if you can see water/liquid covering the tops of the rad matrix there is enough coolant in the rad.

The green top bottle that is being pointed at (Expansion bottle is it's proper name) should be approx half full with coolant. If you look carefully, there is a max and a min marked on the side of the bottle. Once the level is between these two it's fine.

If you top it up, come back after a week or two. If it took any more to fill it back to where you filled it to, you have a leak and take it to your local friendly mechanic.

Edit, the expansion bottle may be down at the min as the weather is cold, contracting the volume of water. If you're not too sure, take a picture and throw it up here.

Silly question but why would you use coolant rather than water & anti freeze?

Coolant is a mix of anti-freeze and water. Coolant is quicker to type every time than "a solution of water and anti-freeze mixed in the manufacturer's instructions". Also, some manufacturers call it coolant.

There is no such thing as a silly question BTW, we all had to learn somewhere.....

If you're anywhere near a Dealz shop they usually have 1 litre bottles of pre-mixed coolant for €1.49......handy for topping up.
