Anybody who thinks this is a good appointment for Madrid is either a Liverpool fan or is living in the past . Yes he did a decent job with Liverpool in Europe but had a bucket load of luck when they won the final.

He won a league with Valencia 12 years ago and hasn't won one since. He has taken napoli from 2nd to 5th in two years despite spending nearly 100 million. This is the guy who also thought it was a good idea to drop John Terry when at Chelsea.

    Disaster written all over this

I'm not a Liverpool fan and I'm not living in the past either.

Firstly at Liverpool he was buying and selling to try and get players that would stick, in other words he didn't have the money to go out and buy the talent he needed to be more competitive. I think he did very well at Liverpool considering how much less money he had in comparison to the bigger clubs.

You say he has spent €100 million at Napoli? Can you break that down for us? I don't think he spent much more than the money they got for Cavani. Anyways it's very difficult to go and replace a player like Cavani. He did very well in 13/14 to attain the same points total as the year before. It's not like they suddenly went to pieces with his arrival. Going for the Europa league might have a lot to do with their drop off in Serie A this past season. He has the first and third best points total in the last five years for Napoli and he didn't have Cavani, or Lavezzi either.

As far as Madrid goes, it will be the first time he will be at a club where money is not an issue. He has all the attacking talent he needs there and just has to sort out the midfield.

Fixed that, they're not mutually exclusive.

Anyways, we know that Benitez will be fired in either 1 or 2 years' time.
He may win a trohpy or two while there.

Your right beating the Italian campions from the year before, the German champions, the English champions over two legs and then beating that years Italian champions in the final was pure luck. He also got to a final two years later. Was that lucky too. He did drop John terry but he also brought them from 6th or 7th to third and won them a UEFA cup. Why is it so hard for people to give the man some credit.

Benitez has always garnered an usual amount of hate.

Bottom line is that his last three seasons have been:

    3rd, Europa League
    3rd, Coppa Italia
    5th

Whether Real should have sacked Ancelotti for him is obviously a different question as to how good a manager Benitez is. Ancelotti is clearly superior, but with him gone Benitez is a reasonable appointment.

He might win the CL next year with that squad, it isn't out of the realms of possibility anyway considering his track record in European competition.

Rafa took us over when we were 3rd. Lost a league cup semi final to swansea, lost out in the fa cup to city, lost out in the fifa world club cuo and managed to make us worse over the campaign in the league. The europa was his saving grace to an ok season for us, on the whole he was a disappointment.

He took us over not far off the top and we only secured 3rd in the 2nd last game of the season.

Happy he won us a trophy but was never great IMO.

Not bad when you consider the top class support he had from Chelsea fans

Little bit of context. The working conditions for any manager were impossible. To do what he did when your own fans were firing tirades of abuse at him in front of the players was quite an achievement.

Your right he should have won the quadruple. Chelsea had finished 6th the season before. Without him Chelsea would not have gotten CL football.

That was the bare minimum he should have done. The alfact he got us 3rd and failed in the league, by and large and managed a europa league was ok in the end. He should have won at least 1 more trophy and a better league canpaign.

As for the fans, he was replacing a huge fan favourite, he knew what to expect when he took over, the 90k a week and chance to further his career after Chelsea were big incentives too. He was basically keeping the seat warm for a superior option in June.

I didnt wish him any ill will during his time but the football and results werent great IMO and Id have expected RDM to get us at least 4th that year, he would have been sacked too had that happened.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out for him at Real though.

He won Chelsea only their 2nd European trophy ever if you don't count the mikey mouse cup winners cup in his first season. Jose finished third as well and won nothing in his first season. Surely the bare minimum is should have won is two trophies as well.

Yeah, don't get the attempts to rewrite Rafas time at Chelsea as a success. He kinda did the bare minimum. It wasn't a disaster, but nothing to crow about.

Imagine what he could have done if he had received any backing whatsoever.

Maybe thats why Madrid want him, he has experience of getting booed by what were supposed to be his own fans.

Don't think he would have done too much more. If he purposely did poorly because fans naturally reacted to his previous criticism of that club, it says less about his ability.

Sure enrique was trash at roma and it looks like he'll complete a treble in his first year at barca, every chance rafa could rack up a couple of trophies there. Will he last long? No. Are real mad to bin ancelotti for him, yeah but its not like madrid will fall asunder while he is there which is the vibe im getting off some of the posts here.

It will be interesting to see how they line up, dont think we will see the 4 defenders and 6 attackers line up anymore from them...

One thing about Holly is that she is always covered in clown paint .
She looks so much better without it

It's a bit odd to call the CWC "micky mouse" and then try to pass winning the EL on Chelsea's budget as a big achievement though, to be fair.

The season he finished 2nd with Liverpool he messed up with all the draws against lower table opposition. With a spine of reina, carragher, Alonso, mascherano, Gerrard and Torres we should have won that league.

They also had the good fortune to have no players sent off in the league all season, while TEN opposition players were sent off again them - including against every other team to finish top 6.

Of course this is Liverpool we're talking about, so strangely) not so strange that it never really gained much of any mention in newspapers or on Sky, BBC and the likes.

    What a desperate post.

They were sent off for good reason, off the top of my head Zabeleta, Vidic, Barton, Cahill all deserved to walk. Alonso was hacked at and defenders couldn't deal with the pace of Torres and gerrard.

Much like Liverpool got a huge amount of penalties last season it was warranted because of excellent attacking play.

Its funny, when we got penalties it was because we were dirty cheats and the referees were in our pockets. Never seemed to matter that United spent most of the game attacking, but que sera.

and his apprentice, Adnan Januzaj. He has more yellow cards for diving than goals scored iirc.

Young was a bad influence, fair play to him for having a good season this year though, hopefully the diving will stop with his game along with the good performances. Best of luck to him.

I'd love to know how a thread about Real Madrid and Ancelotti has ended up being a Pool-United dick swinging competition.
Will yis all fck back under ye're rocks.

If Real appoint Benitez as manager they can't be viewing it as an upgrade to Ancelotti, and more as a way of showing how they demand success.

No - one in this thread has argued that he represents an upgrade over Ancelotti. And I agree with your assessment there of why they have made this change, rightly or wrongly.

I think the point of debate is between the 'Benitez is a poor manager who is sure to crash and burn at Real' group and the 'Benitez actually has a very solid managerial record and might just win a trophy or two with that squad' group. Fun times either way.

I don't think he'll crash and burn, simply because his style of football won't allow it, but he certainly won't keep the fans happy for too long. They'll be whistling come Easter I predict.

Ironic...cos whistling is usually the action associated with happiness.

When Rafa got the team he wanted the football was good. He was more defensive to cover for limited players. You not remember the 4-2 and 4-4 arsenal games, 4-0 against Madrid. 4-1 at old Trafford. It was great football.
