We have an Apple fanboy who makes crappy puns! LYNCH HIM!

I now realise you were talking about ALAC above too :pac:

No I was talking about 24bit 192 FLAC Mr assumption! :D

iPhone 6 is 670 on Pay as you go and is locked to the network. So 20x24 + 670 = 1150.

    Direct from Apple iPhone 6 is 700 + 24x20 = 1180.

    I paid 199 upfront and 35 per month so 35X24 = 1039.

Over 100 euro cheaper than both above options for a far far superior plan to what 20 euro a month gets you on PAYG and no big upfront payment. No chance of me wanting to change network as my plan is the best there is.

I was defending bill pay and pulling numbers out of my arse! Thanks for the clarification with the breakdown though

Apologies! Honestly I'm not sure if you're pulling my leg or not, can you, and if so, how, actually play flac on iOS?

You can! But you need a 3rd party app man!
Something like ampliflac, I think there might be some free ones, even a free version of ampliflac to try!

Pay as you go is the worst possible way to get an iPhone, it's almost full price but locked to a network. Spend a few euro more and buy it direct from Apple.

Also it's much cheaper on a number of Bill pay plans, I got it its bill pay and its costing me 200 euro less over 24 months than if I got it pay as you go and topped up enough to give me even nearly as good as contract as I have from a minutes/texts/data point of view.

I never buy anything I can't afford upfront in cash. Needless to say I rarely buy anything...:p

However, 600euro is only 11.53 a *week for one whole year. I can easily manage saving that myself. I'm not sure why I should pay vodaphone 75euro a month for a 24month contract? I've worked it out on my own payment plan. I wouldn't even spend 20 euro credit a month.

I haven't changed networks in almost 10years and I don't use my phone that much anyways -- i see my friends almost everyday.

The difference with Pay as you go on Vodafone is that after spending 24 x €20 on credit you can then spend that credit on another 16 months of free any network calls and texts plus 1 GB data per month. In addition, you can avail of credit offers that come up periodically and then use the cherry points (over 1400) you get for topping up and buying RED to get another €140 free credit.

Personally I intersperse the different options over the year, so for me the cost for two years phone credit works out at most €200.

A simple phone for simple people.

I estimate my iPhone 6 will cost me 0 euro since it doesn't actually depreciate to zero and in two years I can sell it at the upfront price or upgrade.

The per month cost I would be paying anyway.

Okay. So apple charge €600 plus euro for their latest phone... what are your opinions? A friend of mine actually forked out this money to buy pay as you go. Are mobile phone company's charging too much? I bet the manufacturing cost it way less than the purchase price.. opinions?

its easy.... Apple charge what they know people will pay.

the fact that you can android phones that are the same as or way better than they IPhone in every way for half the price is irrelevant

Okay I still see people are sharing veery different opinions still.... Iphones build quality is great.. the cameras impressive.. and the screen quality, even the service/warranty from apple itself are great. But people are still paying so much money.. for something you cannot customize to suit you, they charge you for everything such as music, apps and so on thats why I think the price is too high... apple and android both have pros amd cons, but android has won it for me.. persobally. (Apple users, dont start) that is just my prefrence

the fact that android users think music and apps should be free explains why that platform won't last.

In any case if you are getting something for free you are the product. You pay Google via the manufacturing with your privacy.

Android charges you too for applications (decent ones), in fact on the android platform a decent music player, with proper playlists and eq will cost you $5 from the google play store unless you are lucky and the manufacturer has bundled one with the phone.

And you don't "need" to pay for all your music, you can import any mp3 / video you wish onto either android or apple phone and you also have free (ad based) subscription options such as spotify on both platforms.

There is also literally tons of free applications for the iphone most of which look and perform better than their Android counterparts.

I'm happy android exists, it makes ios feel so much better :P

Yes but as I mentioned in the top of my post.. you can customise android devices to your needs and preferences. To me.. the only thing that lets amdroid down is the building quality and the rubbish warranty services

you can customise android devices to your needs and preferences

I still want to know more about all these customizations and applications that make android so worth while (seeing as I have an android phone).

Most "customizations" I've seen extend to changing the font to Comic Sans and making the entire interface look like a 1990's website tribute to a 1980's cartoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭KilOit

Thank the popularity of iphones for todays smartphones. first iphones really shook up the smartphone market and without Apple we would be lagging behind on the advanced mobile cpu's we have today.
Saying that i think they're too expensive and have switched to Android since only in past year or so have improved over IOS imo.
Using a OnePlus One now and couldn't be happier with it!

But respect to Apple my lovely Android phone now, if IOS wasn't so good Android phones wouldn't have such a high bar to overcome

Pretty much only Mobile site development - And I have. Sure theres Funky interface hacks that will probably take some tinkering to work properly when the next OS update hits, scrubbing off sh1teware etc.. but I'm still not finding anything very useful or that would make my life easier or insanely greater in my day to day dealings with a phone.

As far as I'm concerned I need a device that will play music, take a few snaps every now and then, browse the net, check mails, send / receive texts, run some VOIP apps, share some photos and and be able to make calls and txt.

Preferably do all of the above fast and with as few external apps as possible, that do not require my entire life story to run - and without toying with the root operating system.

I think it's funny and pretty ridiculous to see Android and Apple fanboys argue with each other over which device is better. It's like me saying my Adidas trainers are better than your Nikes, my burger king was nicer than your mcdonnalds, my xbox one is better than your ps4. aka nobody fucking cares.
This. And they're all basically the same.

    Um what?

Google Play offers paid apps and free apps, obviously a lot of the free apps allow you to upgrade to the full package after trying it out.

I use Google All Access for my music, just like people use Spotify and so on.

As for the privacy thing, well that's just silly. Targeted advertising yes, as in I read up on PC builds and new components quite a lot, so any rare ads I see are about that, rather than Cheryl Cole.

Anyway, both iOS and Android have massive perks. Android wins in customisation hands down, typically most high end Android devices have a better battery life too, such as the HTC One or the Sony Z3. Apple has the advantage in terms of gorgeous design, a talent they have always had.

Really though, it's no different than arguing about rugby, whether Munster is better or Leinster is, its really just the colour jersey. Hell, its the same as arguing between Xbox and PlayStation, its just a gaming machine and the only real difference is the aesthetic.
    It's a preference.

Buying Sim free is always cheaper as you get to use a tariff like 48s 10 euro a month. Manufacturing costs aren't the only costs, there's also R and D, marketing etc+ a huge mark up

If you are paying for any phone outright @ 600 euro and get the full 2 years out of it, that works out at less than 7 euro a week for a device you probably use more frequently than the cable TV.

Its not really that mad, and I know plenty of consultants and the likes that rarely need to use a laptop anymore.

Your paying for it no matter what - just making it monthly might make it feel like less, in reality you'll probably end up paying closer to 700 or 800 if you take out a loan or installments though.

In the meantime, he can sit back and relax knowing he's got a piece of merchandise he can sell next year, completely free from contract to someone for 2/3 what he paid and upgrade to the next model if he's that way inclined.

Would you feel the same way about a 42' ultra HD TV flat screen TV that gets used to watch the soaps for an hour every night ?

Really ? ... Well that depends how many hours a day you watch TV, does your 42' TV get used as much as your phone , and how often you upgrade your TV.

I know some who upgrade them as often or more often than their phone.

At the end of the day, if you spend all day listening to your music, uploading your latest selfie, sending stupid cat videos to other people on Facebook, tweeting the meaning of life to anyone who'll listen and use the phone as an extension to your life in some way, it'll probably get more use than the TV.

Because those some would rather upgrade their tvs more often because they are worth it. You spend ALOT more on a car.. but you use your phone more often. Its not about how much you use it. Its about value for your money

You said it. And to many, having all the mobile social applications and trimmings that come with a high end phone are more worth it than a big square in the corner that plays pictures when they are bored.

How about devices like Playstations / xbox etc ... are any devices like that really "value" at the end of the day ?

All it means is that what he believes is value, differ to your opinion of value.

My personal feeling of value is something that I can justify I will use regularly (or intend to) without losing out too much cash if it turns out I really don't.

Thats a really fair answer. And I agree.. its not just phones.. but xboxes, play stations and so on.. their price ranges are alot lower.. for an xbox one I thibk its just under 400 euro? Still alot of money. I do admit
