Leap Cards and Expiration

Hey, hoping someone can clue me in here. I have a student leap card. Like all cards, it expires on the 31st of December. However, it has 18 days left. When it expires, does the card deactivate? Will I be unable to take advantage of those remaining days when college resumes? Can they be transfered to a new card?
