Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I get the vet to band the bulls at over a year old, they do a lot of growing as bulls and the banding doesn't set them back.

Yes, but this guy is on about banding them as calves, as opposed to being casterated as yearlings like u and most other people do.

1 set from PBM, one from mxz, two sets from HZB and dunno what the set in the autumn is from. Can't blame the ai man as I'd be blaming myself

I know what he is on about, I agreed with you that it's better leave them until they grow a bit. Do you think he'll band them as calves after that information?

One old cow that would have gave more help at the bingo & one bitch that lay on her calf. What a fecken day. Cup of tea and a fag and it's bed for me.

Got it in the vein tonight first try.
    Making attempts to get up.
No grip in pen where she is to try get up

Epic fail here, so bad in fact that half way through watching that the roar came "put away that f'n thing and get me the flutter valve" the cow had moved and the oul boy had her stuck in the milk vein. He went off and left me at it. By the time I had the fence moved the cow was heading out the gap of the paddock. Hadn't a concern in the world about her turning her out this morning but she was down and shivering when I went for the cows this evening.

2 weeks in now and have 50% done. Don't know my ar*e from my elbow, averaging nearly 6 a day, worst (best) day was 14 in the one day.Assisted 4 heifers calving, all the rest working away themselves, lost one calf backwards and one calves in the cubicles, lost him to scraper. By and large so far so good. A slowdown coming in a few days I'd say

Came out this morning to a PHC heifer from a cow and the first aa from the clean up bull bought last year, heifer calved the aa on her own no bother and cleaned after she was milked so happy enough. You.d always be anxious till u see the calves on the ground and cows up after a new bull

First cow calved today. Didn't have the calving pen ready so let cow out into field last night. Calf obliged by drinking cow just as I walked up to her after work this evening. Didn't fancy getting cow into the crush. She's a little mad.

I remember freedom saying a goid few times that he spends a lot of time just standing with his heifers during summer.
Started doing that this yr with calves and heifers this yr.
Must say haven't had one bit of trouble with any of them.
Been able to hand milk most if them when they calve

Makes a huge difference. Let them sniff you and in no time they'll follow you from paddock to paddock. A lot easier than driving cattle

I had a springer there last year that was a bit slow calving and very quiet so I handled her out in the field to make sure everything was coming right. Thought it was a bit tight so said I'd bring her into the pen and pull the calf there. All went well anyway, she walked in as quiet as a mouse for me and I pulled the calf without too much bother but when she took one sniff of the calf all she had in her head is that she was going to kill me. I hopped the gate and stood outside it and she spent a few minutes lacing the gate until I left her. Like you said some are just beyond redemption.

calf was too big to turn, options where to roll the cow or section, there was already mecconium in there so section was best option.

Yeah they take a lot of minding and time which is scarce at the moment. , once a scour is spotted if u get in straight away with electrolytes it normally sorts them, this crypto is a ****er tho.
Anyway another fr heifer just landed and fed, mite be one more 2moro and then there should be a bit of a break, I'll need it if just to get a bit of sleep

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,394 ✭✭✭✭Timmaay

1st late night for me, heifer with the calf coming backwards, looked as if she'd been pushing a decent while, so I jacked him out straight away. Calf was still alive but took a good while to get the airway free and him breathing. Took the cow a good 10mins to getup also, which she thankfully did. I hate calvings like this but all ended well this time thankfully.

3 fr heifers since 12 to night and one blister broke and another with tail up, these 2 will test the dedication to getting beistings into them as I had a s##t evening.i was taking silage over to the yearlings with a feeder trailer and a tyre burst at 4 o clock so I had to get it sorted and off the road bbefore dark but it meant the evening work went very late

Things are so tight at this time of year that any break down like that really fecks up ur day, esp if it happens in the evening. U'll sleep well tonight!

Am I entitled to be a bit pissed off with the following AI Angus calf? 3 out of 6 born so far have significant white markings. Am I right in thinking its going to depress their value a good bit?
