Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Three connections on top of new hot water cylinder

I got a new joule hot water cylinder the other day and I'm scratching my head why it's got three connections on top. The one in the centre is hot water out. The one on the left is blocked but is obviously the immersion because it's so wide. But what's the third one. Looks like a 3/4 inch. I'm thinking it could be a separate feed for the shower but I'm not sure.

Ye it's for a shower or shower pump. Just blank it. Do no use a gunbarrell plug. Use a brass plug

Thanks I managed to get one in Churchtown Stores. Strangely it's not a Irish 3/4 but a UK size. Thanks again I should have hot water for Christmas :-)

Said I'd jump in this thread rather than start another!

My parents got a solar heating system installed a few years back, the system has never been perfect, there have always been problems with the panels overheating, subsequent plumbers have repeatedly said the panels are too big for the amount of water used. It's a 300 L tank.

I've moved back in temporarily and to earn my keep I was investigating (eventually) something my mother has always been mentioning and I've noticed occasionally but never really been bothered to look into. The solar controller says the top of the tank is hot but lukewarm water is coming out of the taps. I noticed the hot water feed was taken from the secondary return connector on the tank, instead of the top feed outlet which would normally be correct, wouldn't it? The top feed in fact leads up into the attic, where I presume it overflows back into the tank. This would explain why we're getting cool water when the top of the tank is hot.

I'm now suspicious that the solar installers thought we had a re-circulating hot water setup, the booster pump was present before the bigger tank was installed, and since the change the booster pump wont shut off automatically unless you close the hot tap quickly, and if the pump is left to run without a tap open for a while hot water comes out of the cold tap, which I know probably isn't right... I'll leave looking for the loop for another day, but for now I'm wondering is this sort of cylinder connection normal or even ok? It could partly explain the panels overheating, as a good portion of the buffer tank might was well not exist. The solar installation to say the least was less than satisfactory, the company made a load of stupid mistakes, including originally making hot water pour into the drain for a few years and covering the house interior in glycol.

Here's the guide for the cylinder we're using: CY300L.
