Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Makelele is a solid pick.

the only thing is the team will have to be built around a specialist DM, which is superb, if you have the right players.

interesting to see where that goes.

Yeah I wish I knew the order for the next round as that could be the main one in shaping it. I was suspicious of you taking him if I didn't if I'm honest Ric :p

Can we edit the OP in the picks thread to include that redraw?

Good pick in Vidic there, surprised you didn't consider picking him faggins, as a combo of Rio and Vidic at their peak is a frighteningly good back two that has proven to be a fantastic pairing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

He will probably meet ASOT and Torres in the first round though. You'd have to drop Vidic if that happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

I was hoping Essien would last longer.

Couldn't let him go any longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

Being able to score with big feet is a great trait to have. Seriously though he is every bit as good as any striker that has gone before him in this.

Was thinking doing that but I knew If I didn't pick Toure someone else would nab him and now Essien and Makelele are gone too so I wouldn't have a midfield general in my team.

Aguero is a great pick some quality still not taken upfront though.

I don't know if I could have chanced waiting another round for McGrath.

I'd have Stam ahead of any defender picked so far, bar Rio Ferdinand. Delighted to get him.

I personally wouldn't have him over Vidic but it's close.

Peak for peak, Stam was better on the ball and quicker, while also being a bull himself. There's not much between them but I'd give the edge to Stam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭Junior D

Personally I would have Stam over Vidic. Just feel he was a better all round player. But tbh, there's so little between them, I don't think it'll make much difference. I actually think a lot of matches will be dependent on the quality of a teams fullbacks. In my opinion, there isn't a huge amount of quality there and with a pretty big amount of quality available in pretty much every other position, I think I'd be drafting a lb or rb in the next few rounds

I think there are only 5 or 6 top class fullbacks available, once they're gone there are a good few all of a similar level available after that. I don't think many people want to choose a fullback as one of their first choices though, when a striker or central midfielder could have more overall effect on the game.

I'm interested in this and have been following. Can anyone tell me what happens after everyone picks all their players. They play each other in matches? How are matches decided?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,610 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Yeah it's random matches with sides drawn against each other then people can come into a match thread a vote for whichever side they believe is stronger. The side with less votes is knocked out until a winner is picked

16 team, straight knockout until the final random draw.
We put up our lineups and tactics in a separate thread and people vote on who they think would win. Only people who comment on the thread and give reasoning counts. There will be a poll on top as a tiebreaker. I think thats how it will go.

Is it too late to propose a pre 1992 round?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

Not at all, round 13 and 14 maybe to be fairer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,832 ✭✭✭✭Blatter

I do much prefer when the picks flow. This stalling frustrates the life out of me :pac:

Can I suggest again that if you don't anticipate that you'll be able to get online within a few hours of your pick, PM somebody else a list so they can do it for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

I thought Ashley Cole would have been a first round pick myself.

Hard to justify a first round pick on a full back though, even when that full back was one of the truly world class players available.

We get it.. ASHLEY COLE :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,750 ✭✭✭redzerdrog

also just to clear a couple of things up, is the pre premier league rounds confirmed? i think it just complicates things as many would be picking players they have never seen

also John Terry is easily the best CB of thr premier league era

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,495 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Yeah, think if there is going to be a pre-premier league round it should be agreed as soon as possible. The chance to get a world class player in a late round could make a massive difference to our choices now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

My vote would be to not bother with that round, I would be choosing a player I've never seen play before and it could be hard to say how good a player from the 50s was compared to a player who is playing now. Whether we go with it or not, it should be decided soon either way.

Looking at the draw I'd miss out on George Best so I agree, we won't bother.

Obviously I won't name him but there is one player that I am absolutely stunned hasn't been picked yet.

I really do think its early for a full back, but while theres plenty of solid full backs around there aren't very many top class ones, and they are going to be needed with some of the wingers that will be selected. Irwin gives me a lot of options, wouldn't have lasted much longer, and there will still be quality midfielders/strikers available next time, so I decided to go for him now.

Isn't there normally two special rounds also just to avoid people at the end of the first getting a bit shafted?

Bergkamp eventually goes with the 37th pick. Amazed a player who makes it into a significant number of all time Premier League XIs lasted as long as that.

is the Bergkamp gif used not from the FA Cup?

People harping on about I cant believe he didnt go earlier and all that, we're still in the top 40 players in the league, it isnt an insult that they havent been picked yet.

Not an insult no, but looking at some of the players picked ahead of him....

Bergkamp and Shearer is an insane partnership.

I picked late in the first round and I'm against special rounds. We're doing a Shane draft with redraws. Let the chips fall where they may. The challenge as always is identifying good value and fit in later rounds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Frankie Lee

I know some people have lives outside of here but I wouldn't mind the pace of the draft picking up a bit.

Making a comment that I was amazed one player wasn't picked isn't 'harping on'...and I never said it was an insult either! The player in question (Bergkamp) would have a strong argument to be in an all time Premier League XI so, yes, I'd expect him to go before a number of players taken before him.

It worked well for Blatter. Shearer and Bergkamp, now that's a front line id take any day.
