So I was kinda bored last night and noticed that I still had this Van Gogh print that my ex put up when she lived here that I've never really been fond of but just kinda wasn't bothered about this past year or so.

I decided last night that it had to go but that I was going to keep the frame as it was a nice frame. Problem is it's an odd shape at 70cm x 70cm so I decided to get creative.

I don't think it's any secret that my favourite videogame franchise of all time has been Shenmue so I decided to whip up something in photoshop. I have some pritt stick, some tape, some high quality photo paper and plenty of patience so I decided feck it... I'll put together a rasterised poster for the frame.

    The starting design:
    12002191_10208095464287169_8930233960090550056_n.jpg?oh=07b046914feb492a2c4eb451b0741a23&oe=56A0B293
(I had this displayed on my second monitor as I was putting it together so that I didn't screw up the positionings).

    Starting off:
    12004799_10208095464487174_7243850547953767395_n.jpg?oh=cffeca2d32229ec977b7083c07bb952a&oe=5666169B

    First layer done:
    12036672_10208095465007187_8274159390404545497_n.jpg?oh=c8cc0795fd6adbe230ab78a8b228de21&oe=565E7517

    Second layer almost complete:
    12046931_10208095465407197_4901132304613494937_n.jpg?oh=1195be9ed6434d922ac660f42bd01769&oe=569E97F2

    Second layer complete:

    Third and final layer complete:
    12036747_10208095467167241_2230538493171431414_n.jpg?oh=7d0fbc4d9cf0b5a942f051d110d91e82&oe=56ABF6DA

    Some edge trimming:

    12038377_10208095467927260_3230198047756939926_n.jpg?oh=06463e7e5e5be35fdae826cc4ee1e1e4&oe=569C2A20

The finished product on the wall:

    11145159_10208095468287269_6015440997668235174_n.jpg?oh=9065144926c778007ef0570696175ce6&oe=56A9BECF

All in all including printing, designing and cutting and pasting it all together this took about three hours.

So worth it though. What do you guys think?

Both pictures are printed with an overlap so you cut one of the edges right to where the picture starts then you just line it up with what you already have laid out.

You just put pritt stick on the white part of the sheet that's already laid down.

I think it looks so good too because I managed to find some super high res artwork that I photoshopped together.

The seems aren't totally invisible you can see them when up close but I think the fact that you can line it all up so perfectly makes all the difference.

Definitely recommend giving it a go if you have any spare ink and photo paper.

I may start using this technique for new marquees for my bartop too. Or other prints to put on the wall.

The Nanashi no Game sequel has had a fan translation released. I played the first one last year and it's a very interesting if not amazing game and I had a lot of fun with it. In case you are wondering it's basically the Ring except instead of a vhs tape it's a curse 8-bit RPG.

So, it seems carts are making a comeback, no €300 ex-jag moulded consoles needed, just a phone

    original article
Not a game on the cart exactly, but the cart will unlock the game content, perhaps running it so, for all intents and purposes, you plug in the the cart and the game plays....

And their strangely provocative teaser video

Big release on GOG today. The original System Shock is finally available after nearly 20 years.

I played through the game a couple of years ago with a mod that added proper mouse look and let you map the keys ( the game was pre WASD so has a very confusing control scheme for people used to WASD that is not rebindable ). It seems this release includes all those features and higher resolution support.

It's still an absolute classic that holds up extremely well and well worth a play if you can get over the badly aged graphics.

And as soon as you overclock that laptop GPU

    laptop-fire.jpg

The best thing about desktop GPU's in the last few years has been just how much you can push them past the defaults without to much hassle(as in press a button, they have made it so simple these days). Laptops don't have a lot of thermal leeway, so not much overclocking there I'd imagine.

Kinda funny but, to update Shovel Knight to include the free Plague Knight campaign I had to go into the eshop from the 3DS. Yet the game has a big "update" option on its main menu, but aside from updating the game to v1.2 the new content was nowhere to be found.
    Strange....

Second unexpected retro rerelease of the day. Megaman Legends is coming to PSN and MML2 is supposedly not far behind. Seems the rights issues over the voice acting have been resolved. No need to spend a fortune on them like I did!

Mine is on version 2.0 I'm nearly sure it updated automatically, I haven't finished it so I'm not sure if that's the version with the plague content included.

You need to beat the game to unlock the cotent but there's a cheat code you can enter to get past that requirement.

The boss rush at the end of that game pissed me off. If I remember correctly I got to the last form and then died. Didn't have the heart to go back to it again. :(

Might give it another whirl this weekend if there's extra content.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭DinoRex

It's a pretty forgiving boss rush though. You get a heath potion after each boss... sometimes you have to be careful not to pick it up if you don't need it though.

It's neat how the boss rush order is randomised though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

never been a huge fan of boss rushes to be honest, it just feels so lazy.
it's like "we've got no more ideas, so here's all the guys you already beat again".

I've no problem with a boss rush if it's done well. Capcom usually do great ones but then again they invented it with Megaman. Most other studios just have lazy crappy boss designs so it doesn't work.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,752 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Boss rushes are grand as an optional extra, or an obstacle in harder modes. But IMO they're more often than not an annoyance and contrivance when inserted as an obstacle in the main game. While I can see how it can be perceived as a final test of the player's abilities, it can just as easily be seen as an arbitrary difficulty spike. Again, keep 'em separate, they are IMO unnecessary busywork when put at the end of a game.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,886 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

In Capcom games they are usually up in there at the end of games that are more about technical skill so the boss rush is an endurance test of the players skill which is why I don't mind them. In something like Devil may cry 3, viewtiful joe and Megaman its a test to see how well you learned the game's system and how well you can do against them all with all your new found skill and toys.

Remember a few months back I said an Assault Suit Leynos game (target earth, cybernator) was in development? It's out in Japan in December for PS4.

What is even better is that Dracue Software is handling development. These are the guys responsible for Gunhound EX which is an awesome doujin game which is absolutely nailed the Assault Suit Leynos gameplay.

Nintendo are really pushing the branch out into merchandise. They finally realised they are sitting on a cash cow.

As Karl Marx once said, "Amiibo is the opium of the people. I can't believe people are spending so much cash money on that junk, yo."

As provocative today as it was when it was written.

Luckily this house has steered clear of Amiibos but Lego Dimensions will be making an appearance this Christmas - another money pit. But at least the Lego games are decent to play and of course Lego > Amiibo everyday of the week.

Kids have and always will be in to collecting figurines, wrestlers etc

But That skylanders and amiibo setup is clearly aimed at adults.

Yep, just not wasting money on them when we don't have the games and they'd be smashed to bits in minutes. Fook that. Lego can be rebuilt. :D

Speaking of wrestlers, the youngest lad has been asking for a real wrestling ring from Santa! As in proper full sized WWE jobbie for out the back. Eh, no, sorry but it's too big to fit on his sleigh or something... That Seabreeze festival has a lot to answer for!

Yes I saw Doctor Who mentioned as one of the packs - so you get a figure or figures and new levels in the game etc.

I think Lego Dimensions will be a bigger money pit due to Lego's infinite tie ins plus the different combinations that can be built.

I love Lego myself and the concept or building the portal and characters I'd really appealing.

Look at this for the launch collection.

    I don't know, it's all very expensive.
And just how much gameplay do you get for your money spent?
Or are you expected to sandbox the sh1t out of it(to paraphrase The Martian) and make your own gameplay, which sounds like a pain in the h0le tbh.

I found the whole 'use your imagination' / anti-capitalist moralising of the Lego Movie rather hypocritical when you take into account how aggressively the Lego company actually sells endless streams of licensed products like that...

Anyway, anybody with an iPhone or iPad needs to download SPL-T. 'Tis a wee little puzzle masterpiece, and this year's Threes.

Yeah , I've got a few of the skylanders games (and about 20 figures)for my kids ,luckily we've been avoided getting sucked into the infinity stuff..and the Amiboos? ..lol .No.Not for me.
But that lego Dimensions stuff is the first I've been interested in. BOTF AND Dr Who ..AND Portal ..Doctor Who and Doc Brown together in the Aperture testing labs??
    Sold.
Or at least I would be if it wasnt 115 quid of PS3 or Xbox360 (or 140 for the other consoles)
Its actually cheaper to import it in from the UK

Yeah was looking on the Smyths website, €130 for the PS4 version vs just under €110 on Amazon. The packs all seem to be roughly the same price though:

Fun Pack - €20 - 2 pieces of lego to use in game.
Level Pack - €40 - 3 pieces of lego to use in game + new level.
Team Pack - €40 - 4 pieces of lego to use in game.

    Expensive.

I know this has arose in conjunction with the price of Amiibo figures, but this glorified DLC is mad money.
I wonder, had the tech been affordable some 10 years ago, would the Lego series of movie and comic tie ins have been as stuffed with content, or would they have just locked away sections requiring the appropriate figurine, I fear that's precisely what they would have done.
Or, to put it another way, we might have seen a standalone Lego Dr Who title, with Doctors, companions and enemies from throughout the franchises history, and fighting in the various storylines on offer. Sadly not to be, instead we've a high price of entry, €130 as Andrew says, and another €40 on top for a far more limited games experience. The trailer looks interesting but €40 is near enough the price of a full game on it's own.

Not retro I know, but the handheld scene has just gotten somewhat lonelier,
It seems Sony are bowing out of the handheld scene, after efforts with the PSP and PS Vita suffered in terms of sales with Nintendo and their DS/3DS lines, despite the Sony consoles being technologically superior.
    link
So, this seems to be a return to the early 00's, when Nintendo pretty much had the handheld market to itself, though now, of course, it has to contend with smart phones and tablets.
I like to imagine that Nintendo have what it takes to stay competitive with the likes of the various app stores, where the gameplay on offer is so different.
The funeral will, presumably, provide a chance to kick the PS TV into the same grave as the Vita, save them digging another hole, while Apple figure how much they can charge people to buy a GoW knockoff on the Apple TV 4th gen.
