Saving games on PS4

    I spent hours on GTA and The Last of Us Remastered last night, saved as I went along buy when I went to turn off the system last night it asked if I wanted to save online (network was down so I couldn't) or to an external HD or on the system. I thought I was saving it on the system but this morning it's all gone.

    I have to start from scratch today, is it not possible to save things on the system itself or did something unusual go wrong?

    It should save on the PS4 and also upload it to the cloud if you have that set up with your ps+ subscription.
