Just picked up GTA V for the PS3 as a post Christmas treat for myself. I was planning on running it on the OH's PS3.
An oversight on my part is that the game requires, 8.23GB of HDD spaces.
Unfortunately this PS3 is 12GB flash memory version. There is less than 2GB of space free. Not a lot actually installed on it. She has a few Singstar songs and Crash Bandicoot from the PSN store. I figured the file for GTA 4 might be a few GB's, turns out it is only 3340KB, so much smaller than that required for GTA 5.

I am just wondering what my options are, could I install the game file on a flash drive, or will I have to install a HDD?

Has to be on the internal harddrive, upgrade to 750gb for €50

    This is the one here
On September 19, 2012, Sony announced that a new slim PS3 redesign called Super Slim that would be released in late 2012 with a 12GB flash memory

If it was my console, it would have a decent HDD. She would kill me if I got to many games. Is a HDD the only way to go, or can I plug a USB flash drive in the USB port.

She won't even notice. Buy it and slip it in when she's not paying attention. : P

Just read up on it first to make sure you have all the software updates you need when you plug it in. I think for the 12g version you might need a chassis too.

She won't have an issue with me fitting a HDD. Issue would be if I bought a pile of games. Just wondering if I can justify the cost. Was delighted to pick up a new copy of GTA V for €20. Another €50+ for a HDD will kill the bargain.

Long term it allows you to get more of the "free" ps plus games. That alone makes the cost more than worth it...

most people on ps3 don't bother with PS+ to be fair. have a look online for a cheap hard drive replacement. you'll source one for cheaper than 50.

What? Why do people with PS3's not have PS+?
Ive had it on all systems since 2010 when it started.

I was also giving average price of €50 for hard drive, 320-500GB are around €50 with 750 being ~€65

    HowTo is here : http://youtu.be/517Ic4pPAMo

Also as mentioned you do need the hard drive bracket from Sony as well.
    Another €15 for you.

Harvey Norman have a 500gb Toshiba external drive for 44 I think. Not sure if it works on the PS3, but it is a 2.5 drive as far as I know.

The 12gb flash version of the PS3 should have never made it to the market imo. Just why, the most basic version of the PS3 launched with a 40gb HDD. Function over size instead of size over function.

Is the HDD bay a particular size that I am stuck with using a sony bracket.
From what I have read, it needs to be 2.5" SATA, with read speed at least, 3Gb/s.
Anything I have read, for that particular model suggests swapping out. Is the flash drive connected to the HDD slot. If it is, it seem like I would need a flash drive just to back up her stuff. Then a sony bracket, and the HDD.

    Would something like this work?

Yes to both those you linked, although some people don't use the bracket(I would personally).

Open to correction here, but I believe her saves will automatically be transferred to new HDD.

Yes her saves transfer automatically, the OP can check the HowTo youtube video i posted, its all in there !

Also 2.5" Sata at 5400RPM is what you need. And bracket is recommended.

Both those links are fine, make sure the bracket comes with screws ! Personally id go bigger than 160GB as it will at least add to resell value.

Not too concerned about the resale value, as she won't want to sell her console. My own PC of 2 years has 400Gb free out 0f 750Gb(650 Gb after partitioning).
Can't see myself using a massive amount of Data at a stretch I would go as high as maybe 320Gb. That would be about it.

Fair enough, as you have noticed with GTA the game files are bigger than you might expect, Uncharted was something like ~18GB and Dead Space was ~12GB

Your decision at the end of the day.
