Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What's the story with people going out on bicycles in the mornings wearing football shorts and no hats, spotted about 5 like this on the commute in...

My water bottle started to freeze, got to work, went to take a sip and nothing happened, top was frozen solid. First time that's happened.

I was nice and warm though, was a bit icy in Clondalkin, but only frosty at home.

Forget your Assos or your Castelli thermal bib-tights. Going by what you seen out on the road, O'Neills GAA shorts are the warmest kit known to man and will protect you from all weather conditions.

We're a tough breed ;). Was starting to freeze hard off the n11 coming home at half 1 this morning. Main roads fine, shortcuts slippery!

And if they are wearing gloves at all then it would be this:

As a previous poster said, the Malahide Road was grand but my hands nearly froze solid despite having decent gloves. I must confess to wearing shorts - these legs are just too pretty to hide.

I saw photos of the water frozen in the Grand Canal Basin and the lake in UCD this morning.

Should have worn ski gloves, my thickest cycling gloves failed the test.

Accuweather is saying 1 degree at 9am, real feel of -1.

I'd guess if you stick to main roads it should be fine, I done 30k round the back roads of Dunboyne at 3 today and it was ok, very small bit of ice in the shade...

I'm hoping the main roads are nicely salted.

I'd be surprised if they are, I haven't seen any of them done so far and Monday morning was the coldest of the year..

Was thinking of a quick spin around 4 or 5 up by Johnny Fox's, pine forest road, down Cruagh, anyone know what the roads are like up that way? Seems a bit warmer today...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭Skrynesaver

I took a detour this morning over Cruagh and Johnny Fox's, there was some ice on the side of the road Glencullen>Kilteirnan and a bit of snow on the verge, but the road itself was fine.

Thanks, should be grand this afternoon so, forecast is saying temperatures will be a few degrees higher by then.

It's been dry for a few days now so main roads should be ok.

When we have these cold snaps & I want to get up to the hills I only descend roads I've just climbed so I can see any ice on the way up.

    I'm a lot less worried about a fall at 10kmh than 40kmh+

anyone taken the leixlip to town route?
how are the main roads? estate here looks bad...

Stocking Lane > Johnny Fox > Marlay Park

Super slippery - avoid today. Lots of black/white ice and some snow.

(its fun descending to Lamb Doyle's with one foot unclipped just in case, on that -12% hill... ;) )

Crap , the road by the Springfield is particularly bad , don't cycle if you don't have to , or leave it an hour if you can

Wimped out because of ice and went to the gym.

NCD and East Meath - be careful of the shady spots. There was a frozen crust on the bit of snow that had fallen.

Be careful in phoenix park, there were sections of ice/compacted snow where I hit the deck

Aside from Chesterfield Avenue, most of the roads there this morning had big icy stretches of hardened snow.

Makes me feel better for having wimped out and gotten the train, even though I would have just been straight down Chesterfield Avenue. Never do fully trust the hard shoulders on a morning like this, never mind the bike paths. Hope you're ok after the spill.

No problems anywhere from Bray to D1, not even a hint of frost at 8.15.

It was a slow fall, so right hip is a bit bruised, no biggie!

Disaster cycle this morning, 5 wipeouts, twisted handlebar, late for work. Very bad black ice in Galway today.
Need to bin my gatorskins, they've served well, but zero grip left in them.

5 wipeouts??? And you kept going. I don't expect to see your name on the wimp list, ever.

I haven't heard great things about Gatorskins grip performance in the wet.
