Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone running Nova on their S6?
I just don't like Touchwiz and would much prefer to replace the UI completely.
That quick swipe down menu is awful compared to the stock Android, is that replaced with the new launcher too?

Using Nova myself, looks a lot better !

The swipe down menu stays though

New update on the S6 flat last night. Seems like an updated drop of 5.1.1. I got 5.1.1 about a month ago and it had kernel build date of June, the new update last night still says 5.1.1 but build date of 21st July. Must be the fix for the StageFright bug I guess, was 250 MB though, so must be more than that in it too.

    On tesco mobile.
Sounds similar to the update I got on Sunday (Vodafone network). It's also dated 21 July.
    Build is LMY47X.G920FXXU2PGOJ

One thing I did notice is that my battery life has improved. Reserving judgement a while though, in case it goes to pot again.

I world have thought this update would have been available to the S6 edge at this stage considering how important it is..

No, I don't own the phone yet.
I currently have a loaner, but I'm due an upgrade.
Plan is to drop Meteor and hook up with Three, as they have the best S6 Edge deal at the mo.
The only thing is I'm not a touchwiz fan, having been an S4 owner.
But, over the last year and having used a delightful gen 1 Moto G and a Nexus 6, I have discovered the pleasures of using Nova so that should iron out the UI sh1te forced upon us by Samsung.
Stock android I love, but I also like a phone with character.
    Choices are two fold.
Buy a S6 Edge now or wait a few weeks and see how the new Nexus 5 shapes up.

To be honest I'd wait and see what the nexus shapes up like. I've my S6 edge since April and apart from the camera I'm very disappointed. Battery life is cr@p. I know it quick charges but it's still inconvenient. The ram issue is a real pain. My phone's home screens refresh 5-6 times a day due to the ram running too high. I end up wiping the cache partition once to twice a week, and this phone developes lag intermittently.
I'm just waiting for the next generation of phones to be released and I'll be glad to move back to a HTC if they get their act together or a Sony, Nexus..

I have used all the Galaxy family and I think the last good one was the S3 so having also used a friends HTC One M7 and liked it I parted company with the S6 and bought a new HTC One M9. Very pleased and I think its a superior phone, some people say camera is crap but also at times I thought the S6 was as well, just depends on each individuals likes and dislikes.

I love my M7 have it over 2 years but it's fairly well past it now. Purple camera fault, speaker/mic issues, battery life gone poor. To me Sense is the nicest android skin and the One series are still the best looking phones around. Only thing putting me off the M9 are reports of shocking battery life and the dodginess of the camera at times. Though to be fair from reading into it that appears to be down to the image processing side of things rather than the actual hardware itself. Still something HTC should have gotten right given their reported poor financial turnover of late.

Right now what's appealing to me most is the Moto X Style though much like the LG G4 it'll probably have to be bought outside Ireland unfortunately.

Feck, I thought my decision was made!
Now I am going to have to wait until October!
    Bugger!
How did they screw up the S6 then, I mean it's not like they rushed it out.

In the interests of balance, my s6 has had no issues at all

Yeah, since the last update my S6 hasn't had any of the infamous issues. No worse a battery than the Z1, or HTC M8 I had before it.
The M8i had before the S6 had superior battery life. One charge did a full day. I have to charge the S6 around 5pm most days as it's usually down to 20%.

The S6 edge is a great looking device but I do regret not keeping my M8 for another year.

Roll on April and my next upgrade

I may just hang on until October, at the very least we'll see some consistent reports on the S6 Edge's performance with the update and better able to judge if it's worth buying, seeing as we'll be stuck together for the next two years!
The cynic in me said "buy the S6 Edge on contract and, if the N5 2015 turns out to be all sorts of fabulous, sell the S6 Edge on to someone who will appreciate it, get the other phone and spend the change on an Xbox One"

Ah I see, I run Nova and the material dark theme on my S6 definitely helps give it a more stock look.

To be honest I'm sorta in the same boat, even though I've had the S6 since it came out, I love the look of it, the camera and overall hardware, but the Moto X Style along with the rumours and images around of the Nexus 5 & 6 are making me sway, all comes down to camera and battery life for me, immediate software updates are a bonus.

I also use Flatro icons and themes, I actually have it running on this Nexus 6, on a Moto 1st gen and a cheap old Huawei, and it makes them all look pretty good.
On the Huawei it delivers aa proper app tray and, I swear, makes it more responsive, despite the meagre half a gig of ram.

Just received an update to my S6 edge. Will be watching battery life for improvement...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,640 ✭✭✭kev_s88

Got my Edge within a week of launch, and apart from the infamous fast charge burning out the accelerometer and the pretty dire battery life i absolutely love the phone. Did the most recent update about 48 hrs ago (Vodafone) and the battery life has gotten a lot better. Im now back to getting a full day out of it which im super happy with as i was just getting used to having to charge it before i left work.

So unless anything else creeps up on the phone, im happy enough with the performance of it :):)

I too have an Edge, although it was bought direct at launch. How would I know if I have an issue with the fast charge/accelerometer? Is it fixed in later models, wondering if there is a way to pinpoint a faulty batch/model derivative?

    Thanks.

i dont know if Samsung ever issued a batch fault for this problem. What happened with mine was on day 2 i used the fast charge cable over night, and when i woke up the next morning my phone would no longer auto-rotate. Apparently there was a link between the fast charger and the accelerometer chip becoming warped.

If you've been using the fast charger and you havent had any problems yet i think you'll be fine. I work for a mobile provider and mine was the only one ive seen come back with that particular fault in the 4 months since its been released. Even our Samsung reps hadnt heard much about it when i told them

So just got my s6. Only 2 problems so far. Pretty bad fingerprint scanner. Like only 1 in 5 times it works.

And then the native email app. Anytime I delete an email it goes into the recycle bin folder, perfect. But then I exit and back into app and it's in my inbox and my recycle bin. So I delete again. Same thing. I have the emails in my inbox and multiples of the same emails (because I keep deleting them) in my recycle bin.

Also, the fact roughly 80-85 % of my system ram is taken up while my phone is idle and all apps closed. I suppose the only way to help that is a new Rom?

I was in the same dilemma myself. Had an otterbox symmetry which covers too much of the edge. All the below do much better which I have all owned : ) I use the Spigen neo hybrid for daily outdoor use, and the official Samsung protective case when I am at work or home.

Samsung official protective case. This is the case I use in work at home. Thinnest of the lot and protects corners and allows you to put case face down on table. Nice and grippy at the back with a textured plastic finish. Exposed sides and tops though so not for outdoor use. Stay away from the clear versions as even a quick wipe of the back with a micro fibre will mark it. Also it causes the back of the samsung glass to show air bubbles.

Spigen Capsule Ultra Rugged. Decent TPU protection but reports of loose fitting around the sides which I also found to be the case. As a result dirt can get in behind your phone. Cheap enough though.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen%C2%AE-Resilient-Protection-Ultimate-protection/dp/B00SVCITW0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440274976&sr=8-1&keywords=s6+edge+spigen+rugged

Spigen Neo Hybrid. The neo hybrid is the slimmest and most stylish looking but is supposed to be tricky applying the plastic bland which can be prone to cracking. Also the tpu at the back while grippy can get scuffed up easily. So far I have not found that to be true and this is my favourite case for every day use.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spigen-Hybrid-Bumper-Premium-Samsung/dp/B00SV635BG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1440275028&sr=8-2&keywords=s6+edge+spigen+neo+hybrid

Diztronic Flexibe TPU. Very tight fitting, good price, and offers decent protection and slim. Only minus is the tpu I found can stain easily and the gap around the camera is not as tight as it could be letting in lint and dirt.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diztronic-Matte-Flexible-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00VMS1D4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440275101&sr=8-1&keywords=s6+edge+diztronic

UAG Ash Excellent case, thin as well but the clear back is prone to scratching.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diztronic-Matte-Flexible-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00VMS1D4Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440275101&sr=8-1&keywords=s6+edge+diztronic

Poetic Affinity. Very good protection on corners but I found the frosted back got scratched easily and the power button was very difficult to press. Just as protective as the UAG though and almost as thin.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-Edge-Case-Manufacturer/dp/B00TL4DLWA/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1440275695&sr=8-4&keywords=s6+edge+protective+case

Spigen Ultra Thin Liquid Crystal. Basically a rubber case with a dot pattern on the clear back which prevent air bubbles. But no lay on table design and the camera in my opinion is too close to the table when you put it down. The sides also flex and come away over time like the Ultra Rugged.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultra-Thin-Semi-transparent-Lightweight-Absolutely-Bulkiness/dp/B00UCETHEO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440276159&sr=8-1&keywords=spigen+s6+edge+liquid+crystal

Spigen Ultra Hybrid. The hard polycarbonate clear back is not scratch resistant as advertised and started to go yellow after 3 weeks. Also it comes with a rubbish clear back glass screen protector to stop air bubbles when the back of the case comes in contact with the back, but in fact was impossible to put on properly so I ended up with bubbles anyway.

Ringke Fusion. Another case which scratches easily and film protector for back glass worse then Ultra Hybrid

Bigger screen, extra gig ram, larger battery and wireless fast charging seem to be the main benefits. I read there is a Samsung update soon to give regular S6 edge the new edge+ software features i.e. swiping in from any app for people edge and now app edge.

I use the Neo Hybrid on my M9 as Flaccus says the most stylish of the lot and was no bother to put on or remove if you wish to change cases.

Just invested in an emerald green S6 Edge, with Three.
Seems fine so far, dropped the Samsung own apps in preference for the Google vanilla equivalents, also running Nova and it rids me of much of that Touchwiz nonsense.
Flatro Icons on the phone also have it nicely dressed up, just installed the apps I was using on the Nexus 6 and restored from my Nova backup, jobs a good'un.
Only issue so far is the incredibly poor battery life, hopefully the just installed 5.1.1 will assist with that.
Being greedy, but how long will I have to wait for 6.0?

I've just noticed something with my s6.
When sending text messages, they automatically convert to mms if I exceed a certain number of characters or if I was to insert an emoji.

I'm with meteor and I know my plan includes unlimited texts but I'm not sure if mms are included. Is there a way to change this setting as I don't want to end up with a massive bill next month?

When sending text messages, they automatically convert to mms if I exceed a certain number of characters or if I was to insert an emoji.

I'm with meteor and I know my plan includes unlimited texts but I'm not sure if mms are included. Is there a way to change this setting as I don't want to end up with a massive bill next month?

This happened me with your s4 but not the s6. I'm on 5.1.1, you on the same firmware?

    Yeah 5.1.1

Did you get a solution on the s4?

Its always been that way as far as i know. The emojis are an annoying one, in that if you insert a Samsung Emoji from the Emoji keyboard it counts as inserting a photo/graphic which is an MMS. If you create the emoji yourself by using : and ) its fine and doesnt get charged.

Not sure about the character limit but as far as i know if the text runs into a 3rd message it converts to mms due to the file size of the text message. Again something that has always happened as far as i know.

I do see this somewhat regularly and its not something that most people realise, especially in the case of emojis. Relatively regular complaint in work (mobile retail).

Same here at first. The scanner being oval is pretty crap compared to the IP6 one which is basically a circle and captures more surface area. You really have to move your thumb around the place when capturing to make sure more of your print gets captured. Or you could just capture the same thumb print twice which is what I did :)

Regarding the ram, android using as much ram as possible is supposed to be a good thing. Mine is typically 75-80% and if you run that Ram cleaner program that comes with it, it drops it down to around 65-70% but it's pointless as Android will just use it up again. I think the best thing you can do if your phone is lagging is just disable apps you don't use (if you can't uninstall them). I don't have many apps open at once so I have yet to see any lag. So far it's been a smooth experience. Also, I have not enabled the intel security anti-virus and knox features and doubt I will.

I don't bother with the native email app or any native apps normally I use google inbox, messenger and hangouts and I'm set.

I've got the Armour Slim from Spigen, I couldn't recommend it enough, it's amazing how useful the stand is :)

    http://www.spigen.com/collections/galaxy-s6-edge/products/galaxy-s6-edge-case-slim-armor?variant=1161474197

I knew there was one case on my list I left out I liked this case a lot but the kickstand was flimsy though I suppose I didn't give it enough of a chance, the edge was covered up too much and I found the back of the armour was scratched in a week. I think the Neo Hybrid is a good compromise. Not as protective but more stylish.

I also like this. Might try it. Looks as protective as the Spigen but slimmer and military drop tested :)

I just put a custom Rom on my s4. That sorted it. Upgraded to 5.1.1 as soon as I got my s6 and didn't realise I couldn't safely root :(.

I can use emojis as much as I want and it stays sms. Well I'm pretty sure it does! I've been looking around for the mms sign or notifications that it's changed to mms but nothing. My texts with emojis are definitely staying sms.

I've just looked back through my texts and it's actually not all of them changing to mms. Some texts with emoji are staying sms and some are mms. It seems random tbh. The main one is the character limit. The messages that are changing to mms are a little bit on the long side but nothing crazy.

As many emojis as you want just don't go over 10 pages worth of text and it won't convert to mms. Hopefully that's it.

Have to say, I'm not enjoying this S6 Edge at all.
The battery life is atrocious, and it doesn't like my Pebble at all.
Strongly thinking of selling it and getting an LG Flex 2 instead.

This also happened with the S1, S2, and maybe the S3. Used to see it in work, when I worked in the industry.

How bad is your battery?! Mine isn't the best but it's certainly not driving me to the stage of considering another phone....

I have charged it about three times today, it's failing to connect to my Pebble properly, the screen feels too small, especially when a proportion of it is wrapped around the two sides.
I'm finding some of the built in apps are not able to be disabled, as I prefer the google stuff to handle emails and messages.
Just the whole thing, not for me at all, and no way to discover it without buying the thing.
Unless tomorrow proves a more positive day than today, I'll shift it on Adverts and get a LG Flex 2 or something else.

I've had my S6 for 2 months and have never charged it more than once a day.

I can't say much about the curved edges as I have the standard model but the screen size is perfect imho.

Sounds like you're having a complete disaster, probably better off getting another phone but I'm definite that your experience is an exception from the majority.
