Over on DIY forums people find it very hard to help without pics. A lot of posts are newbies who aren't allowed to attach pics or links etc.

    Any way to change it

Not without risking the return of the spammers

Last discussion on the subject was raised by the photographers who highlighed similar issues. Of course it's not that difficult to make your way to 50 posts without spamming

Some people ruined it for the rest! I reckon the 50 post rule is here for the foreseeable, it's a necessary evil unfortunately

50 posts seems a bit harsh.

25 or 30 would be sufficient I think, but it's not up to me.

I agree with the ban, because it's easy enough to write 20 nonsensical posts to get up to the magic number. 50 takes more work. Does becoming a subscriber allow somebody to circumvent this?

No, there's no way to buy your way past it.

Maybe something for the suggestion box - can't imagine many spammers spending €50 to then get site-banned as soon as they link to their wares.

I guess that would depend on how easy it would be for the tech guys to remove the 50 post threshold for subscribers while retaining it for everyone else

But it's not €50, it's just €5 for a month which would allow a spammer to start dumping links.

Wasn't it agreed that it was okay to bypass it if it wasn't spam? Or at the very least you could contact a mod on the forum to edit in your links.

And then get site banned, do no pass go, do not collect €5 refund.

I fail to see how this is a loser really.

Spammer pays Boards.ie for the brief opportunity to spam boards and then become sitebanned.

I can't imagine you'll have a big uptake in non genuine people paying the piper just to Spam.

I'd guess in a lot of forums spam gets dealt with fairly quickly anyhow. What would be the detriment to the site if a spammer posted pictures vs text links in spam posts? Is it to remove the possibility of porn spam being posted? I seem to remember that used to happen occasionally years ago, but I'm just wondering if that's the reason specifically rather than just to prevent spammers posting generic pictures.

If you could sub to relax the 50 post restriction, there'd then calls that it's a money making exercise. Sometimes, you just can't win :o

But it could also still be profitable for the spammer, and thus there'd be no end to them then.

It used to be a nightmare in a few of the sports forums (not Soccer because of the access system in place) - we could wake up in the morning to find dozens of links to streaming sites for coverage of sporting events pretty much anywhere in the world. That was dealt with overnight with the 50 post/10 day minimums that were introduced

Simple solution, for the diy forum then might be to put an access system in place where noobs who are trying to help by posting pictures have their post count changed to 50 via admin request
Spammers wouldn't bother to engage in a pm conversation to arrange that as mods and admins would know what they were vs a genuine helping poster who needs to post a picture to explain something
There are enough admins, and probably few enough needs for this, that it might just work

Is that in anyway being reduced directly because of the 50 posts minimum to post images limit or almost all because of other anti spam measures introduced?

It'd be a combination of all the different measures put in place.

There would often be images and linked images embedded into posts by porn spammers and streaming spammers, so both are needed really.
