Rumours Kubiak has the Broncos job

per Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 49ers set to promote DL coach Jim Tomsula to head coach, per sources. Still ironing out details, but Tomsula expected to be 49ers next HC.

This reeks of Jed York promoting a yes man instead of letting Trent Baalke find his guy. Not happy with this at all if it is true. York has made a royal mess of this franchise. I look forward to years of top 10 picks.

There will be no appointment before interviews - Rooney Rule to start with.

It seems there was an article on SB nation earlier but was pulled pretty quick, may be going through the motions

Fangio out now too. Apparently Dennis Allen is in line for the DC job.

We seem to be firing any body who was an good at their jobs. Don't see how any of this helps Kaeprnick/the offense/all the players who lobbied for Fangio t be kept.

I'm sure JT will be fine but he would have to win games at an historic rate to match his predecessor who was fired for some still unknown reason.

I'm hoping for a DC and OC that will make me feel better but I'm not real confident right now.

Tomsula should get the players playing hard for him, they pulled out all the stops when he was interim HC for one game against Arizona, but he has very little HC experience, could be another Romeo Crennel - Nice guy who the players will play for and good defensive coach/interim HC but not an NFL head coach. I hope he does well though, would be a shame for that 49ers team to fade, would be one of the best teams I've seen not to win a SB.

I like the Kubiak hiring for the Broncos. A whole lot went wrong for him in that last Texans season. I mean how many quarterbacks throw a pick-6 5 games in a row? I think he can put a consistent competitor on the field which ought to be Denver's goal if they're transitioning from Manning.

I like what Bowles did with Arizona but he could be getting a raw deal with the Jets. The likes of Bill Belichick and Vince Lombardi would struggle to take that team to the playoffs. Hopefully he can get the players behind him and is given time.

Rex Ryan may have got the best job of all. Doug Marrone looks like he's left the team in good shape and expectations aren't that high, and the Bills ought to suit Rex Ryan with a strong defense and potentially strong running game.

Why? Too much talent to be terrible. Let's what and see what the rest of the coaching staff looks like.

Coaching is so important. Massive step down in HC already and looks another one in DC.

I'm sorry I don't get what you are saying? JT is a massive step down? He has been a very good coach his entire career and is well respected.

I'm not a fan of the hire at all but to say the 49ers are now going to be terrible is a little silly to say the least.

Jesus, completely forgot about Doug Marrone. Lump sum payday aside, that move has backfired spectacularly. No one will touch him after that infamous Jets interview. So much for Saint Doug!

It could go either way with the 49ers, for me they've lost one of the best head coaches in the sport.

    Failure Seymore, failure.

The expectation level at the 9ers is pretty massive in fairness and if they had a QB with a brain to match his physical talent they would have jobs and rings now, imho.

a lot of people "in the know" have been speaking highly of tomsula for a while and expected this move from day one by all accounts he will continue what harbaugh was doing (same style of play etc.) but is less likely to be confrontational with head office

Man if we hire Kubiak we are gonna suck before too long.

If we hire him it's because Elway wants his mate in and a yesman that takes the orders from the top and knows who's the real boss in Denver. That's a worryingly Jerry Jones type move.

That said, if we do get him, CJ Anderson will have a monster year next year if healthy so draft him early in fantasy, folks

Thanks, but specifically a three year deal seems to imply somewhere that more info on the deal can be found.

Either way, expect a much better Bears team in the next year or two, even if Fox isn't everyone's favourite candidate.

This guy's guessing, none of the trusted reporters have said it.

Fox was in for an interview yesterday. Heard several commentators say not to let him get back on a plane without an offer. And the Bears let hm get back on the plane without an offer. Damn right too. Who's lining up for John Fox? Atlanta are the only other team in the mix, and don't think they've interviewed him.

I suppose the Bears want to do a second interview with Dan Quinn, which they have to wait 'til after the NFC Championship game to do, so probably Monday/Tuesday.

Surprised to see the 49ers went past Vic Fangio and gave the HC job to the d-line coach, bit of a snub there. The Bears should get on the phone to Fangio's agent while they're waiting on Quinn. Been an admirer of their defense for the last few years.

You mean for HC or for DC? I'm not sure they would make him HC, far too honest in interviews and has a reputation for clashing with the front office on personnel decisions.

Would be good as DC though as long as they let him run the defense himself and not have a philosophy imposed on him .

Nothing concrete has really come out from what I've seen. All I've read is that over the years, and especially in 2011, LeBeau always remained committed to Pittsburgh and said he was there for life. So that points to him maybe being forced out. The most common theory I've seen is that Keith Butler (promoted from LB coach to DC) would have been highly recruited as a DC elsewhere and they did not want to lose him. LeBeau's age obviously meant his long term future wasn't secure, so they wanted to get Butler promoted before someone else snatched him (and thus being left without Butler and LeBeau in a couple of years time when you'd imagine LeBeau would be retiring). I guess the poor season Pittsburgh's D had gave them the opportunity to do so.

Am I the only one who thinks Kubiak did a relatively decent job at the Texans before that woeful last season?

i guess you have to look at the future of the franchise but id say there where a lot of steelers fans very sad to see him go

The talk is of Rob Chudzinski for 49ers OC. Could be ok I guess, seemed to do a good job with Carolina when Newton first got there.

HC as well as DC, though don't know too much about his personality, just liked what I saw on the field. The Bears have interviewed Dan Quinn and Teryl Austin as HC candidates, so you'd be taking a similar punt with them.

I guess that would be a question you'd need to address alright though, why his own team passed him up for HC.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

His own team passed him up because they are incompetent and they don't want anyone questioning the decisions of the owner or GM.

Thing about VC is if one of the players is unfit/not practicing well/needs to improve in a certain area he will come right out and say it in media interviews.

Great for fans and reporters, but certainly not what a lot of teams are looking for in their HC.

Fangio has been around the league for decades now and has never gotten a HC job, you'd have to wonder why I guess.

Aside from the odd exception, the standard of head coaching candidate available this offseason is absolutely woeful. A tough year to be looking for a new coach.

Sounds like he needs to watch a few Andy Reid interviews!

John Harbaugh is a graduate from the Andy Reid school of speaking and saying nothing

I wouldn't say it's awful just largely unknown, teams will be taking a gamble on hyped co-ordinators looking for the next Tomlin. Quinn, Austin and Bowles all have huge potential if they can make the transition.

Rumours of Quinn wanting Gase as his OC in Atlanta would be a very good combination if it happened.

Both Quinn and Austin pitched the idea of Gase as OC in the Atlanta interviews.

Meanwhile Gase is having a formal interview with the Broncos.

Given the Broncos are searching for a HC I have been reading a lot of stuff this week. Read the stuff about Fox in passing because he still has to be paid on the contract he signed in April. Now it was probably someone flying a kite (or someone with good inside info) and a 3 year $10million deal was mentioned. Couldn't find it afterwards. Either way it's odds on at the moment that Fox will be the Bears HC.

La Canfora reporting that Kubiak will interview for the Broncos job, probably this weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭spiralism

I'd say he's about 80% likely to get it for three reasons:

    1. He's Broncos to the bone and Elway's mate
    2. He's a much easier sell than the other contenders, who will not prioritise this job (given the pressure and Manning uncertainty)
    3. A lot of the best options are already gone (Ryan, Bowles) or unavailable till possibly February (Quinn). Broncos aren't gonna wait three weeks and lose out on being able to build a coaching staff around him. Glaring hole at defensive co-ordinator that needs addressing.

    All I can say is - ****!

That will be a big loss for the Ravens if it happens. The offense was completely transformed this year after the previous years shambles.

Flacco will be on to his 5th OC in 5 years now. It makes his successes all the more impressive given that he has never really had anything steady.

Not really Paully. He was drafted in 2008

    2008 - 2012 Cam Cameron
    2012 - 2013 Jim Caldwell
    2014 Gary Kubiak

Alex Smith had 5 different OC's in 5 years and Sam Bradford had 4 in 4 years. Maybe you're thinking of them :)

The Ravens defensive coaches get poached every single year. Very rare that anyone wants our offensive coaches :pac:

It will be 4 OC's in 4 years presuming Kubiak is off. :)

Kubiak is almost guaranteed to be the Broncos next HC - no one should be surprised at this, especially those who thought his statement last week that he didn't want to be considered for any HC position.

As far back as when he took over as the Texans HC Kubiak stated that there were only two teams that he would ever consider taking as HC - his hometown Texans and the team where his heart has always been, the Broncos.

Austin knows the job is Kubiak's if he wants it - that is why he pulled out of the interview - same with Marrone.

Kubiak will bring in Kyle Shanahan or Rick Dennison or both to run the offence and Ted Monachino or Vance Joseph or both to run the defence (Joseph was on Kubiak's staff in Houston). This will be a very strong coaching staff (Tolbert and Studsville will be brought back) and Kubiak's offence is perfect for the physical attributes and talents of Osweiler - if Os doesn't make it in a Kubiak offence he will be selling insurance 12 months later.
