Anyone know what the cheapest/best way to ship a household from Amsterdam to Ashbourne? I was debating container vs removal company...

It's a 4 bedroom house contents (probably less stuff than an average 4 bed though)

Moving home at long last...can't wait!!

container - container needs to be delivred to you, you need to load, you take responsibility, container driven to port. Port charges for loading the container, port charges for unloading the container, shipping charges, delivery of container to new address, you unload nthe container, container taken away. (my guess is about 2.5k-3k + all the hassle)

    or

ring an international removals company, hand them the key, give them the address to collect and deliver, go to the pub! :)

I've moved to UK and back and also to france and back. Never ever considered doing it myself - handed keys to removal company and left it to them. I used AMC in Naas - they are still around, but possibly look for a compaany specialising in European removals who are also close enough to ashbourne.

My brother runs www.vantasks.ie and is very active on Boards if that helps (username is Cormie). He actually did a move to Amsterdam just before Christmas.

Thanks for everyone's responses. Cianos, I would be interested in a quote from your brother but I am also looking at maybe just hiring a 22m3 van and doing it ourselves. The quotes I have so far differ hugely and if we did it ourselves, the difference with the highest quote so far would be 5.5K. Seriously. I have better things to use my money on setting up house with that kind of the money.

Anyway, we don't have a nice fat company behind us to pick up the tab and actually it is just me alone paying.....so cost is a factor and with that in mind, we have decided that any quote around the 500 more than what it would cost us to do it ourselves, we would probably go for but above that....well, it's a floor or something, isn't it, that could be paid for!

The idea of handing over the keys and retiring to a pub sounds sublime...But I think if we do it ourselves, I will empty a large bedroom here and start boxing up fairly soon. Then when the time comes, I will hire two guys to help pack the van....it wont be professional but it will be huge savings...unless Cianos brother comes up with something better :) I have two companies coming to have a look at the house and do an inventory so will have a much better and more realistic quotes by the end of next week and then it's decision time!!!

    Hello sbsset,

I am normally not involved in household removals. There are some specialist companies, but that usually is a good bit more expensive.

If you want to do it yourself, container is certainly an option. I estimate you would ship a 45' container for around 1500 euro plus VAT @ 23% from Amsterdam to Ashbourne. However, at 22 m3 that you indicate you have a lot of space left, so you would need to find a way to secure that cargo in the container. 20' equipment (which would be more suitable to your needs) is relatively scarce on intra EU traffic and therefore likely to be as expensive as a 45' ctr.

Bear in mind, it would be your responsibility to load and unload at either end. You normally would only get 2 hours free time either end and pay waiting time after that (Around Euro 50 per hour or part thereoff)

Removal companies will always be more expensive than DIY, but it will be done professionally.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers,

I moved back from Amsterdam last year, I didn't have furniture but I had a lot of stuff to ring. I used Anyvan to gather quotes and went with a Polish company in the end. They picked everything up on Saturday morning and dropped it off in Galway the following day, great service.
