Not really sure if there are many free events but a trip to St Canices Cathedral might be worthwhile. Its a great view from up there of the entire city and doesnt cost too much to go up.

The Discovery park in Castlecomer might be an option. The Reptile Village in Gowran. The new Brewery tour in Parliament Street.

loads of free stuff if you haven't already done them:

Canices cathedral - old tombs etc - the lanes around the cathedral hide loads of medieval stones and bits and pieces - look at the gables of the houses at the top of the steps of irish town and there are some cool old carvings up there
Marys church off high st - recently renovated graveyard behind and the crypts you can go down are really cool
Black abbey - loads of old storys about guys been executed on the altar in the good old days - kids love that old stuff and Im sure you could find it on the inter web?
Have a wander around the lanes and spot the old sections of the medieval wall - section of wall near the black abbey - it was an old gate
castle park/castle tour - not free but worth it
Rothe house and gardens - small charges I think - but again worth a quick look
friary street - site of a gun battle during the war of independence - plaque on the wall of the clinic at the friary church - how good are your story telling skills?

nature - take a walk down the nore trail to bennetsbridge - bring a picnic and wellies,
jenkinstown and the deer, discovery park, innistioge village(charge for carpar but again worth it) and estate and also the river trail between Thomastown and Innistioge

with a bit of imagination and a bit of googling there is tonnes of stuff to entertain a 10 year old -

most of the stuff on my list is in the city so no transport needed!

don't take the stuff you see everyday for granted - loads of stuff hiding in plain site in Kilkenny to keep a child occupied for ages

    by the way
keep an eye on the events page in Rothe house - they do loads of cool stuff for kids like themed arts and crafts workshops - example of lasts years stuff below:

Saturday 23rd August 10.30 – 12.30 National Heritage Week – this time the theme is nature, exploring the 17th century garden and all it reveals.
    Saturday 25th October 10.30 – 12.30 Hallowe’en themed workshop
    Saturday 13th December 10.30 – 12.30 Christmas themed workshop
