Sun 8/1 - 6km walk followed by 30mins on static bike & 20 mins strength & Core work

    Mon 9/1 - 6.83km easy run ,Raheny Village/Watermill loop 39:24

tues 10/1 - Cycle commute - 11km each way. 30 mins strength work in pm

Weds 11/1 - Cycle commute both ways. 5km easy run in pm 28:31

thurs 12/1 - Rest. A night with some liverpool legends. Very late night.Much alcohol consumed. Naughty boy!:o

Fri 13/1 - Rest - Unable for anything but rest !

Sat - 14/1 - parkrun St Annes. Wasn't much up for this. Probably still dehydrated from thursday if truth be known but went out anyway with aim of running easy enough and not exerting myself too much. Was cold that morning but had about one layer too many and hat and gloves. Got rid of gloves and hat on second lap as my son was marchalling just threw them to him.25:21 was the result of that so happy with that mornings work.

Sun 15/1 - 10.08km LSR. Doesn't seem right having a long run of 10k but there you go if that's where Im at right now well so be it. Something to build on. Felt grand throughout and did my, by now, customary icing of the achilles whether I think it needs it or not.

28km for the week. Feels like i'm making progress in the fitness stakes.Might try and introduce a bit of speedwork this week on one of the days. There's a fit4life session on a thursday so that might be a good place to start.

Diet has improved over last week and I am doing well on avoiding chocolate although total abstinence was not observed and the pints on thursday probably set me back a bit.

    Mon 16/1 - Easy Lunchtime run 5.42km @5:49avg

Tue 17/1 - Cycle commute both ways

    Wed 18/1 - Cycle commute both ways + 5.69km @5:43 in pm

Thu 19/1 - Decided on some speed work. Was intended to be a pyramid session with 400/800/400 but forgot the second set of 400s when setting it up so looked like this in the end.

    2km w/u @6:01

    400 in 1:39
    400 jog rec
    800 in 3:47
    800 jog rec
    800 in 3:39
    800 jog rec
    800 in 3:28
    800 jog rec

    2km c/d @6:11

    9.6km total

First bit of speed work in a long long time so pretty happy to get it done. Felt like I was doing some real training at last. Aim was to be conservative and not kill myself at the first attempt while still testing myself so I think I achieved that

    Fri 20/1 - Rest

    Sat 21/1 - Parkrun

Wasnt sure how to tackle this one, go all out for sub 24 or just see how I felt during the first lap. Opted for the latter. Started a bit back from front so was very congested fro the start to the first turn at St Annes. I would later rue that. After a lot of stuttering in first 400m or so eventually got into a rhythm and just tried to keep it at a comfortably hard pace. Never really looked at the watch at all to see how I was doing, just kept heed of comfort levels. At one point Murph_D and Ferris_B (I think?) came up behind me and glided past me during their long run. I think he mentioned it was mile 11 to another runner. That was quite disconcerting I must say and a rude reminder of what level I'm currently at.

Didn't blow any gaskets on this one and my watch had me at 23:59 but official time was 24:03 so I'll go with that. Sub 24 is the target next week for defo.

Sun 22/1 - LSR 12.55km @5:43avg. Felt really good and the distance was about right.

    Total for week: 38.94km

mon 23/1 - cycle commute each way

    tue 24/1 - 7.63 km @5:39

wed 25/1 - Rest. Plan was to do session. Was thinking 6 x800 but had a change of heart on the basis that I sense checked my strategy and a little voice in my head was saying not to do too much too soon. Don't increase mileage and intensity at the same time etc so took the long term view and rested.

thur 26/1 - 10.35km @6:10. Easy runmute from work. So long since I've done this I cant remember.

    Fri - 27/1 - Rest

Sat - 28/1 - Parkrun 23:15. Plan was to get under 24 so delighted with this.It was as good as I could give but it is a good sign of progress over a relatively short period so I will take all the positives I can from that.

Sun 29/1 - Should have gotten out early but opted for lie-in instead. Long day at Raheny 5 giving out numbers and then stewarding followed by funeral put pay to any run today. Sure no harm

    Weekly total 27.19km

Mon 30/1 - Easy runmute from work 10.5km @6:11 avg

Tue 31/1 - No running. Cycle commute both ways.

Wed 1/2 - Cycle commute to work. Runmute home 10.44km @5:56avg

Thu 2/2 - Cycle commute from work. Stopped off for club session on way home but weather conditions were horrific so it was cancelled. Others went off for an easy run so i continued cycle home and then went out for a short leg loosener. 4.35km @6:06avg. Tired legs to be honest.

    Fri 3/2 - Rest

Sat 4/2 - St Annes Park Run. Wasn't really up for this mentally at all for some reason. Not sure why? Abstained from alcohol the night before and had a rest day in the legs but the head just wasnt in the right place. At the start I moved up close enough the front but as I soon found out , not close enough to avoid slow traffic at the start. By the first turn I already wasnt enjoying it and it was just a case of getting through it regardless. Didnt look at the watch except at half way point where I was at 11:40 so knew I was on track for sub 24 again so had already conceded that this would be good enough today and wouldnt really be chasing the 23:15 of last week. All things considered I was reasonably satisfied with my efforts and my 23:35 finishing time in the end. Splits were 4:34,4:58,4:52,4:47,4:24 for an avg of 4:50
    1.73km cool down.

Sun 5/2 - Rest. Had planned to do something but an early start didnt happen, partially as result of my Mam's 70th celebrations on Sat evening. Lovely meal and family get together, and partially logistically difficult with a Dubs roadtrip to Cavan. No harm done , probably enough done this week anyway.

    Weekly total : 31.89Km

No weight watch this week. I'm afraid the Raheny 5 goody bags that were knocking around the hose this week will have skewed the recent trend, so I'll chicken out and leave it till next week:o

Things are going well at the moment. The last four weeks has seen me do 28kms,39kms,27kms and 32kms. Not huge by any stretch but its consistency i'm looking for at the moment so this is all good news, the bigger numbers will come in due time. Will aim to get to club session this week again to see if I do something about the lack of speed.

    - FFS!...Did you ever spend 30 mins typing a post and then lose it cos your laptop lost connection temporarily...that just happened to me and I hadnt got a copy in notepad!!:mad::mad::mad:

So now you get the short version unfortunately:

    Great week :

    - 53.91km total ( a bit too big a jump on previous week but will have a lighter week this week)

    - Club Session --Forgot my watch today so this was done "naked";6 x 80m strides plus 12x200 @42 sec w approx 1 min rec I think. MrsMc correct me if I'm wrong there on the recovery since you and MrsKennyG got to enjoy this little workout too !;)

    - park Run easy on saturday due to DOMS still at play from thursday night and LSR on Sunday of just over 12km

    Weight at 99.5kg (Starting 103Kg, target 94kgs)

A bit behind on logging due to hectic couple of weeks with work and going away last weekend.

    Week Beginning 13th Feb:

    Mon 13/2 - Easy run 6.82km @5:44 avg

    Tue 14/2 - Easy run 8.01km @5:53 avg

Wed 15/2 - No running due to long working hours

    Thu 16/2 - As above

Fri 17/2 - Rest - Flew to Warsaw for weekend away with some friends. A belated birthday trip.

    Sat 4/2 - Warsaw -Praga parkrun 24:59

Before travelling to Poland I looked to see if there were any parkruns there and low and behold there are three in Warsaw. So I packed the runners in the hope that I would make it up to do it. Its a 9am start there and I was planning lots of beers etc as one does on a weekend away with your mates. I was pretty determined though to ensure I made it up for this and myself and my parkrun buddy for the weekend went hope a bit early (1.30am to be precise) . Well it's all relative but this gave us a better opportunity of being able to crawl out of the bedin the morning.

We made it up in time and got a taxi to the park from the hotel. Werent sure exactly where the stat line was so gave ourselves enough time to try find it. As it turned out it was straight down from entrance a couple of hundred metres with a monument as the meeting point. I quickly established we were in the right place as I saw some people don the unmistakable high viz parkrun style.

Now to say we were not in the best of health was just a slight understatement. The beers and the late indian we had the previous night were still fresh in the memory so to speak! The underfoot conditions around the meeting point were treachorous, neary went on my ear a few times. THe previous snowfall was now ice and it looked dangerous to me at the beginning. But the course seemed to have been heavily gritted and a test run up and down the finishing straight before the off was assurance that it could be done but much care would still have to be taken. THe course was a loop do be done 2.5 times and on the third lap you would cut back up a finishing straight that dissected the loop so the course resembled something like a wonky tara brooch if you looked at on the map. I actually saw one guy slip on a pair of spikes!

The run itself was grand, mainly because a) I didn't vomit, b) I didnt slip and end up on my arse or put my back out. It was a quiteintimate little parkrun, some 45 runners I think. I finished in 23rd place in 24:59 which I was quite happy with considering the conditions of the course and the condition of me!

It was weird listening to them going through the aprkrun director routine in Polish and listening out for the recognisable thinks like "anyone's first time here.." etc

They were a very friendly bunch and I was delighted to get it done. It set us nicely up for the day and needless to say I wasnt so early to bed that night! ;)

    Sun 5/2 - No running !!

Well done! And thanks for all your tips on it - we did it yesterday! The snow was back! It was absolutely lashing snow beforehand when I was doing a warm up jog. During the run it wasn't snowing, but there was snow underfoot. Like you said, it was gritted though, so it felt ok, even though sometimes I felt my feet sliding from under me as if I was running on sand. Everyone was very friendly, and I was one of only two runners in shorts!
Hope you enjoyed your birthday trip - it was Eoin's birthday trip too. Great minds!

Fair play, ye Raheny runners put me to shame! I still haven't done a parkrun outside Dublin :)

Interestingly named winner from 25/2 actually... surely not connected to these guys? :)

Ah the dark side in you I sense young Jedi...

Ha ha...I see what you're doing there. I could swim to save my life. But technique and breathing are another thing. Swimming fitness too is different to running/cycling fitness so I would struggle without a lot of lessons I think.

    Week Beginning 6th March:

Mon 6/3 - Cycle commute both ways. No running

    Tue 7/3 - 10.05km @5:43. HR 133 avg (Easy paced runmute home)

    Wed 8/3 - 10.03km @5:40. HR 125avg (Easy paced runmute home)

Thu 9/3 - Rest. Most because I was wrecked. Long days in work and bike trouble

    Fri 10/3 - Lunchtime run. 5.67km steady @ 5:11. HR 151 avg

Sat 11/3 - St Anne's parkrun. Had a definite target to get under 23mins. Even dusted off the ST5s :). Thought I had gone out too fast on first lap when the time was called at 10:48 but held it toghether. Was nice to be in around people I should be challenging for places again. I reckon I could have gone under 22 if I had really pushed tested all engines but not a risk I needed to take. Happy out with the progress considering the lack of any real regular speed work at the moment. 22:08 @4:36 HR 154 avg (Peaked at 169. My max measured before at 188 at the end of a race)

    Sun 12/3 - 16.03km LSR @5:49 . HR Avg 116 bpm (surprisingly low ?)

I've converted to my new Fitbit surge. Not sure how accurate the bpm measurements might be.

Sat 18/3 - St Anne's parkrun. Was in two minds what to do here. Usually like a rest day the day before if I'm going to give it a go but didnt have it this week. Set off with no plan really, was motoring along ok, so decided in my mind that if I could go under 23 again I'd be happy. 22:55 @4:42 HR avg 162, peaking at 188 which shows I was giving it everything at the end. Job done. Did just enough to finish in ahead of Murph_D who was coasting in at MP.

Wet & Windy to start out with but got a bit warm towards end. Tailwind made the last few Kms a bit more comfortable but was comfortably tired at the end of this.

    Week Beginning 20th March:

Mon 20/3 - Cycle commute both ways.

    Tue 21/3 - 12.34km @5:29 avg. HR avg 126

Wed 22/3 - Cycle commute in.Lunchtime run wet & windy 7.91km @5:36 HR avg 133. Cycle commute home in PM, another soaking

Thu 23/3 - Rest. Not planned. Work got in the way

Fri 24/3 - Rest. Planned with one eye on K CLub 10k next day.

Sat 25/3 - First real race of the year. 10km BHAA race at KClub. Was very relaxed going into this with no pressure on myself at all to perform really well. I knew where I was with training and felt anything in 47-48 bracket would be a decent days work.

Started out towards the back and took it handy enough until we got out the gate and onto the country roads. Got to 3k and I was feeling pretty comfortable. As time went on I found myself gaining on those in front and from 3-8k I was passing people with regularity and feeling quite strong. It was only between 8-10k that I felt like I had to really work hard and I was glad to still have the legs and lungs to come in at 46:02. Extremely happy with that based on the training done so far this year. Something I can definitely work on. HR peaked at 172 at end of race.

Sun 26/3 - Had intended to do long run today but heavy schedule of kids matches, Mother's day and tightness in hamstring and glute after yesterdays exertions made me call it a week.

Happy with the work done. 33km this week.

Super performance there R. Way better than you expected, and there was more there based on your account of events. I'll be looking over my shoulder very anxiously next time we're both lining up!

Delighted to see such a good result, R! That's great going. All that sense paying off. Recover well and keep up the good (and sensible :p) work.
