Google boots read alt tags as image alone tells the boots nothing.

Search engine reads Alt attribute as an image title. If you use it effectively then it may possible that your images also rank on Google image search results on particular keywords which you used in Alt attribute.

Their are alot being left out while one is going through the seo for a blog or website.
Most people focus on bulding backlinks and the likes. But totally neglect the on page seo like the ALT Tags, META, HEADERS Tag e.t.c.
It better to make use of seo tools to diagnose ones on page seo issues.
So you can get a full report of what is going on.

It's a required attribute under technical specifications.

It's primarily for screen readers, and accessibility so that blind people can know what was there. It should be meaningful, short, descriptive and not spammy or keyword-stuffed. E.g. "picture of dog", "picture of cat", etc. It will also show up for people who switch images off on their browsers.

In a nutshell - you need to have the alt attribute present in the meta data of image files. at the very least it should be left blank, when you have no other option.

Microsoft / yahoo have a tool on their webmasters account page which will analyse SEO issue for you on every page you submit. It's highly recommended as you can see other stuff that you might have done wrong. For example things like not being allowed have more than one H1 tag on a page, etc.
