Snow almost gone now in north Cork .. Very wet now.

Snow is almost gone on drogheda but a 5 min drive north to fieldstown monasterboice and it's like a winter paradise. Not sure how high above sea level it is but it's considerably higher than north drogheda and yet so close. Snow always sticks up there . beautiful place.

Oh well it was nice while it lasted. at least roads will be safer - a lot of minor accident this morning.

The cold snap will be back tomorrow night with snow showers in the west and north again :) And then from Friday on it's a real variety of snow "events" possible in different places at different times depending on the day. The one constant is it's going to turn exceptionally cold again especially at night. No real sign of an end to this cold snap for the forseeable future.

The trailing occlusion of this system tomorrow could give some snow for a while in parts of the east and the south. Euro 4 actually illustrates this as well. Nothing significant but don't be surprised to see a few flakes :)

Looks like a theme is starting to develop.

Everytime we have a cold Plunge of Artic air here in Alberta Canada it moves into America and out into the North Atlanitc. Takes about 7 days ish for this to happen.

As this cold weather pushes out of Alberta it warms up above freezing.

We have had about 3 of these warmings. Very unusal.

Each time this has happened there has been snow in Ireland Scotland. Very cold North Atlantic.

We are having another warming now. But expecting a cold artic plunge late next week.

    So the cycle begins again.

The warmings in Alberta that cause temp fluctuations are Chinook winds. Common enough this time of year.

One thing to keep in mind as the next "phase" of this cold period begins is the winds over all will be slacker so we are looking at the lowest night time temperatures of the year so far somewhere around -5c or -6c as a low inland and that means ice and frost but where snow lies than temperatures would be even lower than that so aside from snow and ice the cold itself is a hazard for vulnerable groups like the elderly etc. Nice to drop in and say hello :)

This snow event mentioned for Thursday evening, is this an easterly or a westerly? Sorry if that sounds like a silly question but I'm not great at reading the weather charts and MT didn't specify which it was in this mornings forecast...

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,757 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday the winds will be northwesterly then backing northerly. Then they will turn variable on Monday as an Atlantic front looks to stall over country bringing the threat of significant snowfall. Then on chances are winds go to a variant of easterly - most likely northeasterly. Bitterly cold throughout.

we should be in with a chance from next Monday onwards

edit: and if the charts work out exactly like the are right now, next Monday to Thursday there could be a chance of widespread disruption across much of Leinster and into the midlands as well. No point in getting excited till sunday tho when timeframe is within 24 hours. Alot can change very quickly for better or for worse.

Well, we got 24 hours of snow cover here from yesterday afternoon to this afternoon, so we've already beaten last winter!

    Bring it on!

There is no higher risk than yesterday's event for the east showing on the models currently.
