I'm looking at getting one of these. I do a lot of travelling these days and have tons of photo and video files that I want to back up securely.

I've heard about these NAS options, and in particular the Synology models.

My current back-up plan is 2 portable 2T WD drives which are fine, but it's not ideal for obvious reasons.

I'd be looking to back up my files to the NAS every time I come home, but what I'm wondering is the time it would take to access files remotely when travelling?

Bandwith would be the major factor I know, but are there any other factors that I would need to be aware of?

Your NAS speed really depends on your connection speed at home.
Imo aswell as backing up at home, get soem form of cloud storage to back them up to aswell. HD's fail all the time, more backups more chances of saving those precious pics.

Synology offer a home centered cloud service similar to Google Drive/Dropbox etc.

It would be perfect for what you want.

What do ye recommend for drives? WD Red 3.5" ??

If you can afford them, then yeah. hey are designed to run 24/7.

I run "WD Red RD1000S 3TBs" in my NAS but their price has increased it seemed. You want drives that wont re-attempt reads for two long if you are using RAID as that can cause them to fall out of the array, so stick to drives that are designed for high usage(avoid greens).

Yep, but not the best value/GB it seems. My info on 2TB disks was outdated.
