    Is there much difference between a 53/39 with a 30/12cassette and a 50/34 with a 26/11

The 12-30 would shift different, very gappy. Effort wise, very little difference.

    Which do you have now?

    http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/,
Will give you all tech details, one other side 53 is pretty hard to push, but then again unless you are in very hilly area you wont need compact
    34x26 is very low

With the standard on a 30 you're at the limit of your low gearing. With the compact you'd have the option of changing to a 27,28 or 30 cassette if you required it.

common misconception there. Gaps on a 12-30 are almost identical to those on a 11-26. In fact you can get 12-30s which are 11-26s except for the 30 replacing the 11. ie the last two cogs are 26 then 30.

A 11-30 would be a different kettle of fish, with bigger gaps.

The standard double does have a smaller gap on front shifting however.
