Anyone know if this is possible?

It would take days using a data stick. :(

So do you want to move them permanently? Or just view them on the PS3 when the are located on laptop?

Can you copy and paste using PS3 media server?

If both laptop and ps3 are on the same network you can use a media server to connect and pull content - something like plex.
However in my experience once the ps3 is wireless this is tricky and you might not always get a connection.

The simplest thing is to just use a USB stick to move them over, but up to you.

Is there much to this media server lark? I'm clueless about it.
PS3 is on a wired connection to the UPC modem, laptop is wireless connection.

Not really - you just need to install and run any of the media servers on your laptop. Your PS3 should pick it up immediately all going well.
You just might though need to plug the laptop into the modem as well, maybe not, but sometimes it works only when both devices are either wired or wireless.

Install and launch the media server.
On the PS3 just do the discovery thing and navigate to your photos - hopefully you can just select the folder and using triangle select copy on the folder...
