Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If FF and FG can't/won't form a stable Govt then it's hard to see another outcome.

I could be a Fianna Fáil led govt with the likes of the Healy Raes and like minded independents, plus Labour.... Nobody will do a deal with Sinn Fein, so there's a realistic chance of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael entering coalition together.

There's no prospect of that. FF won't have enough seats.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Indeed. They'd need the bulk of independents.

It galls me that the likes of Ferris and Dessie Ellis are voted in by the electorate in this country. They're the lowest of the low. How Ferris was elected less than 18 months after collecting the killers of Gerry McCabe from prison is beyond comprehension.

There's 16 candidates. Nobody is putting a gun to anyone's head to make them vote for any one candidate.

Another complete cretin. I wouldn't put him on the same level as convicted violent criminals though who have been alleged to be commanders of the IRA and linked to horrendous murders and crimes.

I'd say Lowry is more someone that I wouldn't spit on if he was on fire rather than actively hope they catch fire like the others.

While its easy to laugh at their antics and look down on them, they have done a lot for the people of south Kerry over the years.

They have and that's why they're voted in. But that's supposed to be the job of the local government and councillors as well they know.

The Healy Raes are not nearly as stupid as people believe and play their electorate like fiddles. They're as crooked as any politician but have fostered a siege mentality for their supporters and have manipulated their PR wonderfully.

Even in their double interview on RTE an hour ago the phrase "above in Dublin" must have featured a half dozen times in 3-4 minutes. It's us and them and they know their supporters have bought into it 100%.

It looks like Joan might retain her seat after all. Pretty handy they threw her home "town" into the Dub West constituency for this one. She'd be retired with a big fat pension if they hadn't. Wonder which one she'd prefer actually.

They have indeed. But that's what we have county councillors for. TDs are supposed to debate legislation and government policy. Not get the potholes fixed. Or provide false alibis to constituents accused of a criminal offence (can't go into details here or I'd be sued for libel).

If I were trying to get elected down the country I'd say

That crowd up in Dublin don't know what it's like down here
    They've neglected us
Dublin Media, Dublin Media, Dublin Media

I'd be confident of getting a good following just on those sound bites.

I dunno, there are some genuine grievances to be had in some of these more rural areas. You can understand why the locals vote the way they do sometimes. Although voting for Independents as crooked as you like is never a good idea.

She lives on the Cabra Road. She grew up in Inchicore.

Parts of the Navan Rd. were added to Dublin West this time around. Not sure how far down it goes now but I was reading on the Irish Times that Joan was putting all her focus into canvassing down that way and they mentioned the family connection. The mentioned Cabra too but it might just skirt on the actual Cabra area.

The early results were mainly the boxes from that end of the constituency and she was neck and neck with Varadkar in them. So regardless of where she's from or what the connection is the new areas seem to be supporting her quite strongly.

The Healy Raes were always seen as a bit of a joke in Kerry.... But...they did what they were asked of by their constituents. They have no power in the dáil when it comes to decision making, but if they can get things done for the people of their locale, then they have done their job..... Ferris has done nothing of note in his years in the dáil, so if he swaps his seat for the other Healy Rea, I say more power to Dolly !

I would more say they've done what people think their job is.

Must say, whatever about SF, AAA and their ilk I really don't understand people ditching FG for FF. Can't believe they'll have similar TD counts.

LOL. Either FG & FF become friends, or else more casinos and hospitals are built in Kenmare & Tipperary. I doubt either FG or FF seriously entertains going into coalition with the Dark Side.

Bet you guys are going back to the polls in the not very distant future.

It's going to be FF & FG no doubt
Probably run together for a year or 2 with FF making certain demands to be done, and let FG steer the ship until tge time is right for Michael Martin to pull the plug when it suits FF and then go back to the country

Whilst I'd expect another election in the not too distant future, a FF/FG is definitely going to discussed by them and given strong consideration.

Both sides (after denying they would consider it) have been making noises about power sharing. And that's what it comes down to; these folks want power more than anything in the world.

If they do give it a shot, it might well change the landscape of Irish politics forever. We're a grass is always greener bunch and a power share could well lead to both of them losing seats with the likes of SF reaping the benefits.

If Sinn Fein couldn't make significant gains after the 2 most hated governments in the history of the country, its not ever going to happen for them
