Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was thinking the same. Surely more people would have to Google Richard Beckinsale.

Kate Beckinsale has been in absolute classics like Van Helsing and Pearl Harbour!

You're watching a documentary about a show starring Kate Beckinsale's father?

In fairness it's one of the best known comedies in British television history.

Oh I knew who she was alright...A little look through Google images does no harm!!

As an aside Porridge was one of the great comedies of that era.

Ah I know what Porridge is! I had UKTV Gold back when I was unemployed!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 23,931 Mod ✭✭✭✭TICKLE_ME_ELMO

I see they're making a new version of Porridge. It's a one off but I assume they'll do a full series if it's any good.

What's a turn down service? Is it a bloke who escorts you to night clubs and politely informs lads that you're not interested?

Have you patented this business idea?

Incase you were seriously asking they sneak into your room and fold back your bed cover so you don't have to. Most recent hotel I was in did it at about 6 o'clock and would switch on the TV too for some weird reason and leave the remote in a little leather folder on the pillow.

It's a completely ridiculous service which must have its origins in Downton Abbey times. Can't see why anyone would need their bed turned down.

The mother is walking past the oxfam shop in Rathmines and says she's going in to look at the books. I went in for nosey and came out with Ferris's autobiography and O'Driscoll's. Both in hardback and both practically like new.

3 quid for Ferris's and a quid for O'Driscoll's!! How have I never thought to go in there before?

I think there is some stigma attached to using charity shops that prevents people from going in.

I think there is some stigma attached to using charity shops that prevents people from going in.

When I was younger I used to think charity shops were for poor people to shop in. I didn't realise that their purpose was to raise money for charity.
The Oxfam shop on Parliament Street is really good. It'd mostly books and DVDs. I left a load of stuff in there one day after a massive clear out and had to stop myself from replacing it all imidiately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,871 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

It's one of those shops I've never given a thought about. The mother is always in them - she's an avid reader and maintains it's a mecca for books.

She picked up another couple of books today that she has been looking for (keeps a notebook with the ones she wants!!). They had a great selection of travel books - if I get away later in the year I'll definitely be back in there to pick up a couple of guide books.

Soon enough you'll have made back all that cash frittered away in Disneyland in savings on rugby books.

    Ya didn't buy it?

I love charity shops the amount of stuff I've found in them is unreal.

Best was a furla handbag for three euro, my boss was disgusted as his missus wanted one heeeheee

Love a charity shop adventure to restock the bookshelves. You find the odd gem too - a year ago I found a gamecube + about 30 games for €40. I added the games I didn't have to my collection and sold the rest, made a tidy profit.

I never actually looked at the clothes as I was on a high with my books.

I remember reading that there was a charity shop in an affluent part of London. Some clever clogs was buying the ladies practically new designer clothes and bags and was flogging them for a tidy profit on ebay!!

*heads off to charity shop in donnybrook*

My dad told me a story before about a friend of his who was spending a small fortune on dry cleaning each week. He used to drop off his 5 shirts for the week on a Friday evening and collect them on Monday morning before work. Said he was grumbling massively about it, but needed it as he was basically a pleb at house stuff. He was also pretty miserly and hated having to do this.

He found out that the charity shop next door to the dry cleaners had a deal with them, that any clothes donations that came in during the week would get washed and ironed by the dry cleaners en masse at the weekend and returned for store-opening on a Monday.

Dad's friend notices that they sell shirts for 50p each. Does a bit of thinking and comes up with this plan.

He would 'donate' 5 shirts each Friday to the charity shop, they would get them cleaned and pressed by the dry cleaners, and then have them back on sale each Monday first thing. He would be the first to the shop and buy all 5 for £2.50, saving him a fair old chunk of money each week.

Dad said that one week he got knocked out by the flu, and couldn't drag himself out of bed for on Monday. When he managed to get to the shop on Tuesday morning still feeling rough, he found (obviously) that they had already sold each of his >£50 shirts for 50p to other people the day before.

tl;dr, miser gets miserly, gets caught out.

I dunno. I actually don't know what to make it. A lot of sources close to dana White saying he's livid. It just smells funny. Why troll fans like that? Why is Kavanagh getting in on it?

Unusual way to announce it too, for him. I'd have thought he'd have had a press conference, a parade, a fly by from the Air Force etc. etc.

There's an article on the Irish Times saying they believe it to be real and an official announcement is imminent but then the rest of the article lists all the reasons why it's probably not.

If it's not true making jokes about retirement at this time given the events that happened a week ago in that sport seems pretty crass and of very poor taste.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,978 ✭✭✭✭irishbucsfan

    I think it's true, but I don't necessarily believe it's permanent

Nate Diaz also says he's retiring by the way!

Wetting themselves with fear. They'll have nothing to write about if he retires.

All the talk now is that he's gotten in trouble for not promoting the Diaz rematch. So either this is all part of him doing exactly that or it's him throwing a bit of tantrum that they took the fight from him. It'll all be sorted in a few days and we'll all be thankful of getting even more McGregor news in our news feeds, media sources, discussion forums etc etc.

I've no interest in MMA and don't really begrudge the guy, but this constant attention seeking and reporting is just getting really old now. Wish someone would just create a filter to allow people to block anything and everything McGregor related from our internet and SM browsers.

I enjoy the sport a lot, but I don't like him or the media circus that surrounds him. I'm lucky enough not to live in Ireland so it can be avoided. So I'm hoping this is the end of it all but I know it won't be. At least now we'll get through UFC 197-200 without that annoyance which is great news.

I preferred the story line where Vince McMahon pretended to be a "greater power" to trick Stone Cold Steve Austin into doing his bidding.
