Do you think departure flights will be cancelled or postponed in Shannon airport early tomorrow morning?

  • Registered Users Posts: 542 ✭✭✭coillsaille

Seems that some think that because it hasn't been anything special yet and its nearly bedtime its all over. I only wish storms did bedtime.

Show is basically over for anyone apart from galway up to NW and then all NI in the morning hours.

Strongest part of the storm is nearly hitting the coast around Galway and then slowly moves across the nw and North and down into central Ni by 9am. I see the problem that those areas will be seeking peak gusts around 90mph for nearly 10 hours! This will result in a lot of damage

Wind is definitely picking up strongly again in Cork City. It's been calm for a few hours.

It should be safe to go running outside tomorrow afternoon? Remembered doing a speed session the evening of the February storm. We had the wind on our backs running downhill :)

Just saw on RTE's live updates that a lamp post is down at the waterside in Waterford. Would have to be a pretty strong wind to blow that down?
it's difficult to make out from the picture but it doesn't look like Waterside, looks like the junction from Park road/water street out toward south parade/Waterside, the Feb storm took down a lot of trees in a line along the same route, some fairly big ones from St Declans school through to the park and De La Salle college, so it's seems like there's a bit of a wind tunnel effect in the area. (Lots and lots of big old trees up here too, I always brick it when storms come in because my house is sheltered by them)

(yeah, it looks like it's right outside De la Salle college, they lost a few trees in the exact same spot last year. Luckily school isn't open right now)

Hey chocolate chip, wind forecast for Shannon in the morning shows it gusting to a max of 48 knots from a south westerly direction, perhaps some delays , mind you the bigger aircraft shouldn't have to much problems.

Fairly underwhelming stuff thus far apart from that freak gust at Cork Airport (was that even real?).

Still expecting some pretty big gusts at Belmullet overnight. Remains to be seen how far inland those strong winds will travel from the exposed west coast.

Out on the coast in Galway in Spiddal and the wind is really picking up. Waves are looking fierce too. Still not enough to give children the day off school though (lucky ****s)

Apparently the worst is yet to come for cork! Massive lul now in macroom! Supposed to really kick off from midnight......was told what we experienced up to now is nothing compared to what will come. (Source:@weatherexpert on twitter, hes been spot on last few days!)

Looking at the latest Dublin Airport TAF it seems like things are not going to be at their peak until 13:00 to 18:00 tomorrow afternoon (in Dublin). This is going to be one long lasting event.

Most of it should have past for the southwest ... Cannot see anything more severe then what is already past over

    Guys can I ask,

Wind not to bad here at the moment in roscommon/galway. But schools are closing left right and center! Is the worst still to come or is tgis mass hysteria? How bad can it get?

As someone whose community suffered massively following the last storm this is no mass hysteria. There are some excellent contributors on this weather forum who keep us all up to date, every day of the year. They don't do hysteria but give us factual, clear advice and it is up to us and others who lurk how we interpret that.
As for the school warnings, the advice from the Dept of Education is that if a red warning is given by the Met Office and that children will be travelling to or from school while that red warning is active then schools must close. Common sense really.
The winds are certainly cranking up here again so it looks as if it is going to be a long night.

I can't imagine its gonna get much worse here in Kerry. Look after Rachel on her travels !

Chocolate chip, you should be ok, im no atc!! however winds will be straight down the runway so providing gusts are not out of limits for the aircraft you will depart as normal.
