Some fairly big gusts hitting Dromahair at the moment... enjoy the weather chasing folks... I'm out.

Stay safe boardsies, and thanks for all the wonderful updates, charts, comments and giggles. Great night of virtual storm chasing and only for I have to actually see the early part of the morning I would be hanging on in there for another couple of hours!

    Oiche Maith!

Gone a bit too quite now here for the last 10. Was a massive few raps of thunder, then hailstorm and now relatively quite.

Clear skies south of Bandon but cloud cover coming from west. Lightning seen west around Drimoleague. Wind rising again.

    Thanks

Capil Curig - a mountain top. Folks the main fun and games with this won't kick off for a few hours yet for most. The East will be hardest hit from about 6am 2morrow. TBH I'm suprised theres not a Red Warning gone out for some counties in the East given the latest model runs.

    FYI folks...

US National Weather Service (ie, NOAA) on Twitter ‏@NWSOPC that ASCAT wind retrievals confirm hurricane force winds west of Ireland - pic.twitter.com/7ccbvl7kxj - in other words, a bent occlusion / stingjet setup looks like reality now.

Picture quality is quite bad but it looks like waves are getting close to breeching the sea wall in Lahinch.

I can't post the live cam feed cause I am a new user but it's easy to find via Google and has been posted a few times in this thread.

The RTE mast outside town was hit by lightning last night.

We still have not seen the full brunt of the storm in Mayo yet.

Judging by the amount of repeats they show, it probably struck twice ;)

Put simply, strong wind speeds made stronger. It's caused by evaporation of cold stuff in clouds, the cold air comes down and gets faster as it goes. The cloud is shaped like a scorpions tale, hence the "stingjet" name.

An infinitely better explanation is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_jet

Looks to be some of the highest windspeeds anywhere in the world right now.

The Americans are pretty excited about this, so many tweets with the words 'hurricane force low'
    https://twitter.com/NWSOPC

Met Eireann just said, and I say 'just' violent storm force 11. They didn't go the whole hog and go for a hurricane force 12.
