I have flown in and out of New York where the snow so deep youd disappear if you stepped of the tarmac and here what would be classed a minor snow fall will close the airport!
But the runway won't have snow that deep for two reasons, one the aircraft won't be able to accelerate and secondly if they are landing they will have a bloody hard time stopping or maintaining directional control, i could also add a third reason about impingement drag and damage, so the same limitations will apply in Dublin as they will in JFK.

    Should be an interesting evening.

Fire is on, FR24 loaded up and Live ATC running.

Obivously the runway won't have snow, the problem is the dopes in Dublin and cork can't clear it!

BTW Shannon did stay open through the snow.

No need and almost certainly inaccurate.

I wouldnt fly if you were my pilot!

And was cork not closed last night? How am I inaccurate in that case?

I'm not insulting the airports, I'm insulting the management.

    Quick test flight.

Cycling the gear if I heard correctly.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,403 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

I don't think that Cityjet was a scheduled flight.

    .

Edit - Actually looks like they are trying to say the test flight was an emergency. Not the case. I heard the pilot as he was requesting clearance. He wanted to do a quick loop and did not care where control sent him. Was deffo not a scheduled flight.

I see what the pilot is trying to do there ;)

So which airport in ROI will have the first go-around? And the first diversion?

    My bets are on Cork.

When do ye think things will really kick off, weather-wise?

    Give it an hour?

There is a red warning in place for after 9pm.
Id say after 5, things will get bad though.

Little less, gusting 48kts in Waterford and Cork at the moment.

Winds have picked up an awful lot here in Kildare in the past 30 mins. Gustig quite heavy now. Should not be long before they hit Dublin.

SNN have no commercial arrivals before 8pm now, KIR have none until tomorrow, NOC is tomorrow too, so between ORK and DUB and forecasted wind direction and gusts, i'll go with DUB, DUB has less gusts but with more arrivals than ORK the chances are bigger, ORK have 3 arrivals between now and 18:30, DUB have 25

Sorry but you are wrong, we are allowed to takeoff and land in snow, if you think about it, there is no way during a snow storm that they can keep it clean, but we do have limits on the depth.

I realise that, my point is that you do need to clear runways if it snows anymore than a bit, yet cork airport couldn't do this, and Dublin couldnt do it in 2010.

EI724/725 cancelled tonight (ORK-LHR). Is this weather related?

Can we get back to matters concerning FR24, there's been loads of off topic chat in this thread. If you want to talk ice and snow ops I'd suggest starting a new thread.

The Shannon arrivals board is very disappointing today, no T/A flights and Heathrow was only 2x.

Id say cork will have a few mishaps. Dublin too later. Very very gusty here in Clare, yet the red warning does not activate until 9pm tonight.

the thing with using Runway 16 is now I sit looking at my computer identifying the planes that are rattling overhead.

Anecdotal, the 737s are louder than the A320s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Tzardine

Gusting at 41Knts now. Starting to pick up for sure.

    Go around. EI55N.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,188 ✭✭✭PukkaStukka

Looks like he gave up early. Kind of strange they aren't using 28 as the veering gusts will be on the nose rather than the side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 482 ✭✭bronn

Agree. Must've been hit with a strong gust on the approach or something. Would windsheer do that? It was windsheer at 1,000ft.

Sheer can be any direction and is particularly risky if gusts on the tail from behind
