There is the potential for a severe wind storm to hit areas of the coast including Galway tomorrow. So far the guidance has placed it as an orange warning but there's a feeling it might be upgraded to a red warning by tomorrow. It's expected to hit late afternoon. Might be wise to pull your bins in before you go to work in the morning and leave your bike at home, generally do whats necessary to keep yourself and your home safe just in case.
Of course it might not be as severe as feared but better safe than sorry.
There's plenty info over on the weather forum.

    Live wind map here: http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=3.74,42.10,512

This warning is from Weather Alert Ireland. Its on their fb page. It seems to be representative of the opinion of well informed posters on the weather forum and met eireann.
    ****SEVERE WEATHER WARNING****
    AREA: NATIONWIDE.
HIGH RISK: MUNS / CONN / ULST / STH LEINS.
TIME: WEDNESDAY A/NOON TO THURSDAY AM.
A severe (RED) weather warning for coastal areas of the western seaboard tomorrow afternoon and evening/night. A less severe but very strong storm conditions elsewhere in Ireland.
Expect widespread disruption to power supply and delays and or cancellations to air, sea and rail travel.
We expect widespread damage throughout the W to NW of Ireland with hurricane force gusts of 140kmh plus with dangerous sustained wind speeds.
Coastal flooding is likely in the W & NW with amoderate risk of breaches on southern coasts of Munster and Sth Leinster.
Elsewhere coastal areas of South Munster, Leinster and east Ulster will see gusts reaching 110kmh to 130kmh mid to late afternoon onwards.
Some risk of localised flooding on the southwest and west tomorrow evening.
Please do not attempt to drive, walk along coastal drives, high ground and avoid forest walks etc.
High sided trucks etc should think twice before taking to the roads tomorrow, especially on roads in the western half of Ireland.
Leave bikes and motorbikes at home tomorrow
Non essential travel, commutes should be cancelled.
Call in upon those living alone and elderly neighbours if you can, and early tomorrow morning tie down any loose fittings around your property such as broken tree limbs, trampolines. wheelie bins etc.
We might update again later tonight if its required once the 18z model run updates.
CONFIDENCE IN DETAIL: 90% with a 10% chance for further upgrades and or downgrades.

It is so miserable out (Galway), made worse by looking at everyone's pictures of settled snow. We are all just at the end of the 24hr vomiting bug too. What a joyful week.

It's upgraded to red warning now for Galway by met eireann, that's gusts of 130 - 150km expected.

I had a severe wind storm on Monday after a few pints the night before. I had to issue a brown warning, I told everyone to keep their windows open and be ready to leave enclosed areas at a moments notice.

Does anyone have any information about possible school closures tomorrow in the city in the wake of the "Status Red" storm warning?

It seems Facebook is teeming with rumours about various schools staying closed tomorrow, but I'm not sure where to go for information.

Anyone think this was a bit of an overreaction to get a paid day off? A lot of inconvenienced parents had to take time off today.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭beardybrewer

    Results:

211 homes without power in Gort
    299 " Clifden
    45 " Athenry
    83 " Carraroe
No reports of fallen trees but weather making driving, cycling and walking hazardous.
    *Advertiser

So a few fallen branches and toppled patio furniture.

I know weather is a playing the odds but closing the schools seems an overreaction in hindsight. The real cost is parents just lost a day of paid time off to be home with the kids.

If it's a "status red" (highest level) warning from Met Éireann then I think they're right to close the schools. If it looks like it didn't warrant that, then maybe Met Éireann overestimated the storm.

They're more likely to overestimate it now after getting some grief for underestimating floods last year.

Better safe than sorry, once Met Eireann issued Status Red and Dept recommended schools consider closing it would have been irresponsible for schools to open. Safety of children, staff etc needs to come first imo. Its only one day. What bothered me was that our school waited til this morning at 8 to announce closure, in stead of taking the warnings on last night and announcing so that we could make necessary arrangements.

I understand the caution and it could of course been worse. We've been so windblown and battered already I think all the branches that were going to fall have fallen and lines that could blow down already have. It's been a wild yet mild winter so far.

Don't know how overdone it was though, the car was getting buffeted around a fair bit on the way home from work last night before the red warning was due to come into effect.
