Broker or just talk to the bank

After saving for a looooong time, I've started the mortgage application process with my bank-just had a quick chat and got the forms to fill- I'm starting to wonder if a broker would be a better option than applying myself to a couple of banks. Anyone have experience either way? What costs are involved with a broker?
