we have a fireplace that we use occasionally, there is no flue just the stone it was built from (house about 70 yrs old) we are going to get a stove my question is would it be possible to get the stove fitted and just have the back pipe going straight through the wall at the back of the fireplace and out into the garden? instead of using the chimney (which we could just block off at the top?.
the reason I am asking is based on cost I have to buy a load of fire proof stuff (real long name cant remember it) to fill in the gap of the chimney if I go that route estimated cost for that would be €4-800 depending on how many bags i would need (they are €20 a bag that fills 100 litres, I have no idea how many litres i would need to fill) would it be cheaper and easier to just bore straight through the wall and fit a pipe going up the outside of the house ? it is a detached bungalow, no other houses or neighbours.

Probably not, vermiculite ( the long name ) is worthwhile fitting , if you go straight out you need a twin wall flue , that will cost roughly 800 to 1k euro.
You need to have the flue ideally the same size as the stove outlet otherwise it's false economy .
Fit the stove , fit it correctly , long term the gains are made.
