That's two days in a row now that Ray has featured in Gift Grub sketches on Today FM. They obviously miss him. :p

    Misery porn.

Listened to this just a while ago. Yes it is misery and harrowing but it needs to be discussed. If it annoys you, you can turn off your radio. If it helps one family, one person, if it makes one person come forward to look for help it is worth your annoyance.

Say it helps one person, but tips another into misery? I am half serious.

"How would you describe 'the craic' "

The exact opposite of Ray D'Arcy?

Will you let her answer one of the damned questions ffs. Or respond to one of your statements more like.

Was only half listening but an interviewer has to have a view and interject. If you invite a politician onto the media and let them ramble away, well you get is waffle and spin. Still laugh when I recall the interview with a former head of the big gov dept and they just went on and on for what seemed like ages, posing their own questions and answering them.

Joe Duffy was being bullied. Hah. The irony.

And what exactly IS the problem with them talking over Joe Duffy or telling Ray D'Arcy a few home truths. We have listened to the opinions of D'Arcy and Duffy for long enough, unchallenged. As presenters they are not meant to take a stand on things like the 8th amendment and abortion, so maybe it's about time somebody put them both back in their box. I'm sure the BAI would certainly agree.

Think you'd be in a minority there Peter, whatever about Rónán Mullen (and I thought he was bullying the English woman) - the other chap was a complete looper. Most ordinary folk would look askance at that sort of carry on and recognise it for what it is.

Didn't here JD but Mr Mullen was bang on in his criticism of Ray Darcy. It is about time someone told him a few home truths although Darcy probably didn't realise it.

What 'home truths' are you talking about?? That we, the licence payers, pay his wages?? That's hardly news and anyway it applies just as much to Senator Mullen... though I do dearly wish the Irish voters voted to get rid of that particular institution.

That he is so pro choice and not at all neutral when discussing abortion as the BAI found.

Ah.. light goes on but as far as I know there is no referendum or public vote at present on any issue related to abortion. Which implies as far as I know, that presenters do not have to be scrupulously balanced in their coverage of such issues.

The previous incumbent of this slot, Derek Mooney, was never slow in pushing the gay rights agenda. So it's expected in a radio slot like this I think, that the host's views will be more opinionated.

In that regard, Ray probably reflects the liberal agenda in social matters and I dare say, he'd be reflecting the views of the majority of his listenership. So pas de problem.

Not a problem when he was with a commercial station, different ball game entirely when togging out for the state broadcaster as proven by numerous upheld complaints about impartiality to the BAI.

Hold on, where are the regulations that oblige the state broadcaster to be impartial at all times??

Couldn't possibly be the case as I've heard so many one sided interviews and stacked panels.

And shouldn't be the case (except arguably during public votes) as otherwise hosts would be afraid to say Boo to anyone.

With all due respects to everyone, anyone who would be hugely influenced by D'arcy's point of view, needs seeing to.

    In my opinion.

Well clearly Brendan, his views upset some people. Posters here like to attack Ray for his high wages, the (old) car he drives, capacity to hit the wrong button and all that sort of trivia. But it seems with some at least, that this is just a smokescreen and their real problem is that they don't like Ray's views on certain social matters. Fact is, Ray reflects the ordinary concerns for many ordinary families and citizens in the country, so carry on.

Apart from talking to family, neighbours and friends....

But on the matter that seems to upset Senator Mullen and some here:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/majority-support-repeal-of-eighth-amendment-poll-shows-1.2714191

I believe there is also widespread support among parents for inter denominational or non denominational education options.

I caught most of the Brian Kerr interview yesterday and really enjoyed it. D'Arcy kind left him at it and didnt ask too many daft questions.

Best part was at the end when a text came in saying Brian Kerr and Robbie Keane would be a dream duo to manage Ireland. Kerr simply said 'except nobody would understand us'. A gas man.

    In my opinion.

Radio is a deceptively powerful means of communication, a fact which D'Arcy is acutely aware of.

The abortion question is one he returns to on a very regular basis (mostly in an amateurish, lop-sided manner) in comparison to other issues-its clearly a hobby-horse of his.

He knows if he allows the same unchallenged arguments to be aired, they will eventually find their way into the subconscious no matter who intelligent his listenership claims to be.

It's a form of browbeating, and he needs calling on it.
