Remember when there was talk of building a couple of high rise towers in the Dublin docklands.

People were complaining that the place would be turned into Manhattan.

Look at the scene behind him and think of what idiots they were.

There was no famine, plenty of food exported from the country to feed everyone who died at the time.

Nobody mentions the famine of the 18thC.

Same stats involved there. Minus the politics.

I do implement austerity for myself if I can't afford something. If money not there one can borrow, but one can only borrow so much before you can't borrow anymore. Ireland reached that position.
You need austerity to get things back on track.
    The alternative was far worse.

Except economies are a bit more complex than that.

Check out Mark Blyth of Brown University's arguments on why austerity is a nonsense:

I'd recommend checking out more of his thoughts (for those with an open mind).

perhaps a new city in the midlands should be created , the idea isnt as mad as it sounds , the idea has been floated in the uk for a new city in the north of england and the uk is less london centric than ireland is dublin centric

we have a pretty excellent motorway network in this country right now and as the recent apple investment in athenry has shown , business is prepared to spend outside the capital

If it is a nonsense why is our economy growing at 4.8% and taxes coming into revenue ahead of predictions?
No austerity and there would have been no money for social welfare, health or education.

The prejudice and discrimination faced by British Muslims is very similar to the experiences of Irish people in the UK in the 1970s.

Irish terrorists were a better class of terrorist altogether, what with their perfunctory warning calls and everything. None of this 'blowing yourself up' nonsense. Except for that guy whose bomb accidentally went off prematurely on a bus in Aldwych.

I'm all in favour and have often advocated such a plan in the past. Although I would suggest a new city in the north west as a counterweight to the critical mass dependence on Dublin, while simultaneously creating viable transport channels linking large towns and cities along the west.

    More singing.

    More singing.

This is getting weirder. I think the message is: " shure never mind the auld economy, let's have an auld sing-song".
