She was the "weather field 1".......cant remember waht it was all about...did'nt she kill some conman who was pretending to be a pilot?????

    R.I.P.

No, he (the fake pilot she was dating) framed her for some fraud. She was Deidre Rachid at the time.

I cant belive I remember this.

Yep Deirdre Rachid cos she married some Morrocan lad ? Shamir ?

anyway, I can't believe I remember it either . RIP - will be tough on Ken and Tracy ...

My thoughts are with Ken, Tracy and Eccles at this sad time.

Not a fan of the show but seen enough of it over the years growing up.

Was only listening to Ian Dempsey laughing at her crying sounds on the radio this morning about her last line before she left late last year.

Had no idea she had left but sad time for her family and friends.

I used to watch Corrie in my teens (80's) but am totally lost if I ever happen to catch some of an episode (normally when visiting my mother - she's been watching it pretty much since day one), I have to say from the little I saw of it, I think the show is a pale reflection of its former self.

IIRC she (the actor) had a bout of cancer ~20 years back and had to take a break, perhaps that had some bearing on her passing. 60 is far too young to die these days. RIP. I'll especially remember her for Deirdre's part in the Baldwin/Barlow triangle (back in the pre-satellite TV days when such things were national news) (and I think she had a fling with Dev at one point, as well as a stint in jail when framed for fraud?)

was she ever in anything other than corrie??

    Quote from Wiki about this.
The episode in 1983 when she ends her affair with Mike and reconciles with Ken was the highest rated episode and the news was so big it ended up being announced on the scoreboard during a Manchester United vs Arsenal match at Old Trafford, with the words "Ken and Deirdre reunited. Ken 1 - Mike 0" leading to cheers from the spectators.

Quite a shock to hear this. I didn't like Deirdre Barlow but you can't deny that she was a great actress.

She had cancer a few years back I think.

Haven't watched Corrie in years - it turned into Dallas onth' cobbles due to ratings wars, but before all that shyte I enjoyed it; I liked Deirdre's storylines. Not sure she was that great an actress, but a great character nonetheless.

People talk about her prison storyline and her Moroccan toyboy who died donating a kidney to that little wench Tracy... but does anyone remember I think her first dramatic storyline: having an affair with Mike Baldwin? (When first married to Ken). Apparently made the neon board in Old Trafford during a match.

The Edge, of U2 fame, doesn't look so healthy either there.

It says she died after a short illness. I don't want to fuel speculation but it seems to have been very sudden given that the daily mail article was written only a few days ago.

Yeah, looks like a 'personal tragedy' of sorts.

It is reported by the Daily Mirror that she died of a brain tumour, and spent the last few days of her life in a hospice.

Maybe she did and I know a brain tumour kills very fast. But when someone suffers from depression to the extent they are on valium you tend to instantly read between the lines

Every time i see her face I think of TRACEY being screamed in a Mancunian accent.

You do know valium is for anxiety, not depression.

I didn't fully but it is also an addictive drug.

Sad to hear of her passing too. Even though I don't watch the show nowadays, I feel she was one of those TV constants that has always been around from our childhood. Showing my age but I too remember the Mike/Ken/Deirdre love triangle from over 30 years ago. I also remember the gripping storyline where she was sent to jail as she cried "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING".

Must be only Ken and Rita left from the early years now.

Haven't watched a single episode of Coronation Street, or any Soaps for that matter... like East Enders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Home and Away... etc.

They just bore the hell out of me from what little I've seen that my sister watched, with their dreary settings and boring stories of everyday affaires of people and what not...

That being said, Anne having worked for the show since 16 shows some real commitment! :o

    RIP

Corrie has not been afraid to present viewers with appalling and shocking things like rape, murder and Keith Duffy's acting ability.

Jaysis, she worked on that show since she was 16!

I first remember her when she was married to some lad who fecked off to Germany or something.
My parents always watched and in the days when we had one telly and two channels there wasn't much of a choice but watch it or tune in to Radio Luxemburg.

I always thought she was older ?

BTW the mental issues she was exhibiting (according to that daily mail article) could be actually down to brain tumour.
It can sometimes cause people to act eractically.

Ken was in the show for 10 odd years longer as he is there from the very start.

I am not allowed discuss …

Most people grew up with the character exclusively though. There was no twitter or anything back then and as far as I'm aware, she wasn't in much else of note. People have watched the Deirdre character since the 70's. Actually speaks volumes to Anne's work that she portrayed the character so well.

A bit OT, but there have been 8500 episodes transmitted since it started, so assuming 22 mins of content per ep (30 min slot, skipping credits and ad breaks) that's around 130 days' content to watch it from end to end, and that's without sleeping, eating, or performing any ablutions. As they say "Up Naath" , "ya'd be in a raaaht botha" after doing that.
