    Why are these so expensive?

    Thanks.

Once upon a time in the not so distant past diesel engines were noisy, caused cancer and made about 35 horsepower per litre of engine size. That has doubled and tripled through the use of more expensive technology.
Fortunately, because of all the savings you make doing high mileage, you're still coming out ahead by going diesel even after a few four figure fubars.

    Greed plain and simple
Car cost more new so obviously you had deeper pockets.

Buy on line where there is more competitive pricing

    Compared to what?

What else can you compare them too?

Compared to two nights B&B at the Shelbourne?

Assuming you mean compared to injectors in a petrol engine, I'd imagine it is related to the higher fuel pressure associated with diesel engines (this is a guess).
