    Hi everyone,

Grateful for any responses. Does anyone know where to get good quality malt vinegar? The only option seems to the Sarsons brand. Every other type of vinegar seems to have a bunch of different brands in the supermarkets, but not malt for some reason! Anyone seen nicer versions around? It's for a chutney recipe so would like to start with a good base. Thanks!

Fallon & Byrne would be the stock answer here.

Sarsons is the default malt vinegar, IMHO the best and original, have always used it for chutneys and they always taste great, to say that sarsons isn't a good base is just wrong.

Nowt much wrong with Sarsons Malt vinegar in terms of quality and not many superior competitors on the market. Aspall do a golden malt vinegar that you may be able to find. Maille is the other source of widely available posh vinegars but I can't see a malt in their range. If you want a better flavour base, try an apple cider vinegar or a red wine vinegar.

Thanks for all replies, does anyone know where you can buy big bottles or Sarsons then? Supermarkets only seem to have the small ones. In fact for decent quality vinegars in general is there a good place that sells big bottles cheap?

    Very much appreciate the responses.

Apart from in the uk the only other place might be your local cash and carry(wholesaler)

I doubt you will get massive bottles of vinegar, as chippers buy their vinegar as 20 litre drums of acid which they dilute down

    Have you tried Asian markets?
I'd wager they have big plastic bottles of sauce.
