Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A bit of a freak story this season. He's a 31 year old Irish journeyman forward whose best season total before 14/15 was 13 goals, yet already has 18 goals in 24 apps for Ipswich in the Championship this season

Any other seemingly average players that have had a golden autumn/winter?

Fair play to him, to bad he can't kick snow off a rope for Ireland though, has been poison in every game he's played. Hopefully he can carry some form over.

Antonio Di Natale was 32 the first season he scored more than 20 goals in the league, and proceeded to repeat the feat aged 33, 34 and 35. Now, he was a 'decent' player before that rather than 'average' but certainly has improved dramatically in his mid thirties.

Good Championship Player, not good enough for Premiership.
Prob one of Celtic's worst signings this century.

Still remember him scoring a few crackers when he was with Waterford United!

Nice to see him doing well but if they get promoted they will probably need to replace him.

Didn't Wessi Hoolihan get a call-up for the Irish team when he was at Shelbourne, then he disappeared for a few years before getting called up again?

    Similar to Murphy

8 caps, fair play to him.

Hopefully he'll get another few before he calls it a day.

Pelle has had a very average career before signing for Southampton although he seems to have died a death over the last month or so.

Fabio Grosso had one good month in his entire career. It just happened to coincide with a World Cup.

I just love the way he slotted home that peno to win the World Cup

Unspectacular career, but calmly slots it into the top corner.
    Quality.

His 2 seasons with Feyenoord were his peak. 50 goals in 57 games.

But then , a lot of players can score lots of goals in Holland

    Murphy is septic

Didn't realise he did so well there. His record is fairly poor before that though.

Probably a tad controversial but Robin Van Persie was always very hot and cold (largely due to injuries) until his late twenties. Even then, he's only had two seasons of sustained quality.

Gary McAllister had a bit of a renaissance at Liverpool.

McAllister was a very good midfielder and played some great stuff with Leeds and Coventry. What he did with Liverpool was no different than the majority of his career.

Fairly sure he can can be both

Two more today. The man is on fire.It would be great to see him get top scorer for Championship.Did Long and Doyle get it a few years back?.I know they each got 20+ at their peak.

    Dario Hubner.
Anyone who watched football Italia in the mid to late 90's would have heard of him. A brute, but for three seasons (definitely with Brescia and possibly Piacenza), around the 33 age he banged them in. Was joint goal-scorer in the middle year and got a couple of call-ups to the Azzurri.

I think it's great that an Irish striker is scoring so regularly. He is getting quite a lot of press and article inches devoted to him lately because of the sheer multitude of goals he is scoring. 21 goals in 29 appearances (missed two and doesn't even take penalties for Ipswich (his fellow Irish international McGoldrick does that)

Apparently he puts his form down to working with Terry Connor (remember him!) on the training ground, who was giving him insightful advice about the types of runs he should be making and his positioning. He said in an interview he wished that he had worked with him years ago because he has made him a much better player

When you look at his CV it has been a bit meh but Martin O'Neill needs to make the most of Murphy's golden autumn. Fingers crossed he can take his form into the Poland game.

Well he was pretty anonymous when he played for Ireland back in autumn.

    Seemingly average player?

Gary McAllister was one of the finest midfielders in England when he and Batty anchored Leeds to a title. There was nothing average about him.

Top scoring Irish player by a considerable distance admittedly at championship level and some "experts" on here can only begrudge. Fcuking typically Irish mindset.

Murphy grew up down the road from me and I have played with and watched him play since we were kids, I am delighted for him that he is having such a good season and for confidence reasons alone, which must be sky high he has a shot at replicating some goalscoring form for Ireland, but I would not get my hopes up.

I'm sure he will make the squad but doubt O'Nell will change tac from the obvious Long / Keane selection.

Personally a fan of playing in form players over reputations. Would be starting Murphy and Walters up front.
