Being something of an "old timer" I've been driving a good few years and have gone through a good few cars in the process. So, given the "classic" status of many cars, not to mention the asking prices, I wish I'd have kept my Fiat 850,(first car) Mk1 Capri, Mk3 Cortina GXL, both of my Granadas, 2.0l and 2.8l and I was sorry enough to part company with my 7 series 3.5l BMW (e32).

I've also owned a few cars that I'm happy to forget about, but that's another thread..........................

A mk4 fiesta car-van I had years ago had alloys tinted windows and I put a really nice pioneer head unit in it too, was actually the first car I had in my own name. Was 1.3 petrol so you could tax it privately for cheap and it was nct and doe exempt though I think that loophole is now closed.

Really regret not holding onto it as a second car, was a fierce handy little van for throwing stuff in the back of etc.

I have to hang my head in shame:

    Ford Escort Mk. 2 RS1600
    Ford Cortina Mk. 4 2.0S
    Opel Rekord E 2.0S
Mint BMW E30 316 chrome bumper, which was promptly scrapped after I traded it in

    All rare now.

My 02 Golf 1.4 petrol. Bought it in 05 with barely any miles on it. Some extras - original owner a VW employee. Climate control, Sunroof, 6 disc changer, integrated fogs, etc... Not usually found on the 1.4.
It was my first 'proper' car after years of Clio/Polo nonsense due to crazy insurance prices back then. I loved that car. Traded it for a diesel passat that broke my heart and my bank account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

Peugeot 405 1992 1.6 - although the engine was agricultural as were the crap rear drum brakes and heavy on fuel it was an amazingly comfortable and futuristic car. Owned it for 6 yearsThe velour seats were amazing and much missed. People talk of leather but velour is far more comfortable and not available any more. Drove it into a scrapyard in the Uk and picked up my brand new golf 1.4 back in 2003 which I still have and it isn't as good a car. All the peug needed was a water pump and I scrapped I because of that...
Really regret not going for the golf gti back then it was 5000 grand more than the 10 for the 1.4 and I couldn't justify it at the time. I tend to keep cars for a while and the golf Ive given to the father while I crack on with my 13 year old 225 TT roadster which Ive had for 4 years and won't be selling it although may have to retire it from the daily in the next 2 or 3 years.

That's what I'm talking about. The sunroof ,climate etc make the Mk4 golf and I was happy as mine was air conditioned. The Gtis that motorpoint were selling at the time were fully loaded imports for 15stg and I passed one up which I really regret.
The 1.4 engine is a decent motor not powerful but smooth and handles well without the weight of a diesel engine up front.

Why the GT was a lovely looking car? Looks like a keeper to me more than a 156 would be. The old spyders were also lovely.

My 1991 MR2 G-Ltd, fantastic car. Owned it for 14 years and never gave me one bit of bother, even when it was 20+yrs old.

Sold it for £500. Those kids have a lot to answer for!

Mine was an 03 alfa 147 black 3 door....got it as a demo and flipped it 2 years later for an 01 320ci so probably didnt have it long enough to give me any grief...real head turner in its day and drove lovely....tspark engine had a lovely sound....saw a gta on carzone recently for about 5k that i would love to take a punt on!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭Slicemeister

My Rover 213 I bought for 350 punts when I had written off my first 2 credit union cars within the space of a month.
Hated it from the off but drove the ring out of it, every morning you'd look out the window and there she'd be panting like a puppy waiting to go.
Sold it on for 200 after a years very hard driving. Only realised how good it was when it was gone.

Probably my favourite car ever. Very well sorted by its Japanese owners, did a lot of enjoyable modifications to it and did a few drag races too.
Sadly I sold it to free up money for something else, and it got stolen and written off shortly afterwards :(

It's not often you see something that takes your breath away to that extent - does that Smyth's Toy Superstore span TWO units?? :)

My lost love - don't laugh - a 2004 Clio 1.5 DCi. 100 HP, half-leather interior, fantastic to drive - weighed nothing, great brakes, a doddle to get the inner rear wheel in the air. I still pine for it.

    Ts or v6?
The v6 are going up significantly already.

Every morning I get into my gtv, start it up and regret selling my 156 v6....then I go for a drive and forget about the busso. In time I might come to regret selling it, but right now it was the right decision as it wasn't being driven.

Parents always regret selling they're astra. 2002, bought in 05, kept until 10. Never gave any bother, just needed servicing, timing belt, and a new airbag sensor. Very reliable and cheap motoring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,311 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Previous car, Honda Civic. Random SRS light problem, but had to give it away as the rust underneath it was horrific! Saw it recently on carzone for a few thousand, looked nice. Someone is still running it, as someone did the NCT for it in May 2014.

Comfy to drive, and had a decent amount of overtaking power in it. Bright-red-Honda also meant people don't stay in front of you, as they expect you to be a scumbag :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 141 ✭✭princess3901

It's got to be my Honda Prelude. Wish I had kept it but took a mad notion that I wanted a type R civic. But neither car would be feasible now as I do a lot of miles

in keeping with the Honda theme regretted getting rid of my 99 accord looked after that car so well seen it a couple of months later on donedeal in a breakers yard looked a bloody mess bumpers focked according to the breaker there was a couple of attempts to steal it.
wanted to buy it back from him but was to far gone
