Yea its the law that insurance companies have 2 pay out the 3rd party. You could drink 20 pints and drive down the road and crash into some1, they still have to pay. Now they can follow you for the claim, because you were not accompanied with a full driver. These cases go on for years and usually the company give up or are told that they will not get paid. Sticky situation you are in. Happend a friend of mine 4 years ago and its still going on.

If it's clear cut, they'll keep going until they get their money.

Insurance companies have their own solicitors to pursue these matters in the courts. They'll get a judgement against you and will be able to have that attached to your earnings and property. This is reality, not internet scaremongering.

If they know you weren't accompanied, they'll pay out all third party claims as that's required of them by law and once they have a final figure, they'll come after you with the bill.

The big thing to worry about, and really worry about, would be a personal injury claim. If you rear ended someone and have admitted the circumstances and material facts to your insurer, they'll wait until the final bill is paid and a settlement reached with the injured party, then they'll come after you.

The 7 thousand for the car is something they can act on and pay out quickly but the personal injury claim is the bit that will really hurt your pocket when it is all finished.

It's a bit silly for anyone to be suggesting an insurer will not chase this up when the time comes. It's naive and giving you false hope. Insurers are in business to make profit, not to let losses from effectively 'uninsured' policy holders hit their bottom line.

Bad news I'm sure, but that's how it is. People who say otherwise might make you feel better but it'll be better for you to expect what will come soon enough.

This. It is likely you received no bill yet, because a personal injury claim is likely. Causing 7k of damage is not really that slow moving if you managed to damage the doors too. It can be several months before an application is lodged with the Injuries Board. Technically, it could be a couple of years. Once a claim is made, you will receive notification and it could be anywhere from a year, to several years for a claim to be settled. That is when you get the bill.

I'm amazed how little your premium went up OP. The NCB must be toast presumably?

p.s. Why did you drive unaccompanied?

I would assume the claim hasnt been fully settled yet and as a result probably hasnt gone through the books yet so his quote hasnt gone up as a result.
They do say insurance is going up as well which could then explain why its gone up.
Another reason might be the op is on a provisional and might have no NCB or very little to lose which might explain a small increase
